Yes I had the same problem but it wasn't caused by the plug it was dust accumulating in the fans and heat sink.
Anyway try this :
Unplug your laptop and turn it off. Pick it up and raise it to face level. Blow really hard into the back of the laptop where hot air comes out of. A plume of dust should be expelled from the fan area and from now on if you manage to get rid of most of it your laptop should be a lot silenter and not cut out! worked on my Toshiba that I'm using now!

Well, the plug itself overheating sounds more like an electrical fault....
its the processor overheats the computer automatically shuts down, if this is so you should buy a new heat sink fan which fits directly on top of the processor...
if you know how to remove the processor, this is not difficult... if your unsure, take it to a professional.

Old laptops without Intel M (mobile) processors were never designed to run that long. See if Bestbuy or other stores have fans for laptops or laptop docking stations. Newer laptops should run lot cooler though. HP Compaq have some good deals.

You could probably do with cleaning the fan, which after three years will have loads of dust and cr4p on it. Make sure it isnt plugged in, and do it slowly to make sure you see how to reassemble it.

Yeah, my friend has something similar.
It had four fans, and recently he was complaining about it hanging and stuff, so I opened it up and found only one working fan.
But you said its the plug thats getting warm...?
Must be a short circuit, maybe your laptop's charger block is faulty, probably short circuiting.

Yes, that's definitely the fan that needs replaced. Your best bet is to take it to a computer place if you don't know how to put a fan in yourself.
