Hardware - October 2006

My machine is AMD Athlon ™ 64 3500+ 2.21 GHz, 1GB of RAM and OS is Windows XP Pro SP II. My machine is not very slow but I am thinking how to get better performance by adding hardware. So how much can adding RAM give better performance for this machine?

Basically a modem has 2 options USB and LAN connection. I have connected the modem to USB and I am using the internet. If I connect to LAN by installing a new Ethernet card will my Internet connection be faster. My modems max. Capacity is 25Mbps. Which is better LAN or USB?

I just bought a Toshiba Satellite laptop but was thinking of returning it and buying a HP Pavilion DV2000t instead, because I've heard that Toshiba laptops (while pretty solid for the most part) have horrible battery life. How is the battery life for a HP Pavilion DV2000t? Also, are the HP laptops really as glossy as they look in the ads?

my computer boots up normaly but as soon as i connect my usb cable from my modem to my computer it shuts down and reboots straight away.Even if my usb cable is attached when i boot up then shuts down. my modem is fine as it works on my other computer.

I have just reinstalled the drivers for the hardware and it still will not scan or work. It shows that the printer is connected and (OK) but when i use scan gear or MP navigator to scan anything it says scanning failed. please help this is so anoying, i cant get any of my work onto my PC (drawings)

I have a Macbook Pro and wondered if I can put a mini-DVD disc in the slot or will it only accept regular sized DVD's and CD's. I'm afraid to just try as I don't want to get it stuck. Thanks for your help.

My old computer was suddenly off and wouldnt turn on anymore when I returned home one day. I was going to buy a new one anyway but the guy at radioshack told me it could be power supply or my motherboard.Anyway I have a new computer now but need to transfer the stuff off the hard drives on my old computer to the hard drives on my new one. I dont wanna have to fix the other computer yet so powering it on wouldnt be an option so is there a way to connect the old hard drive to my new computer via some kinda usb or other connection?

I purchased my iMac 8 mo. ago and am now experiencing a noisy fan. I was told this was a software problem. Has anyone else had this problem with a noisy fan on there iMac G5 Intel Core Duo, and if so, how did you correct the problem?
