I took it out and washed it by hand with lots of soap and disinfectant. Why does it not work now?

you probably used warm water. This can warp the platter.
Its best to immerse in cold water, and leave to soak. Then, scrub the platter violently with a scourer, and ciff.
This will secure it from others seeing your data, including yourself.
If the little arm, does not align correctly on the platter, when putting it back together, these can quite easily be bent by hand, as neccessary.

Cleaning does not mean cleaning literally..... as virus, in computing parlance is not the 'virus' which gives infection to humans!!!

U r a bit late in posing the question.... Now the only solution left is buying a NEW DRIVE!!

U need to 'format' the new drive with the help of a 'program' that comes with any of the operating system (OS) u plan to use like windows or linux. The OS may not 'install' unless u 'format' a drive and make it usable. Had u not washed ur HDD, u could have 'formatted' it with the said 'tool' which comes with the OS.

Using partition magic, do a full destructive format and repartition. Using a native operating system utility to do this will usually not wipe everything and can leave errors on the disk.

it does not work because water has affected the 64 bit chip that is in your hard drive, your best option is to open it up and use a hair drier to let it dry out and then leave it a week near a heater or window so the moist in the hard drive can get out, if that dont work your stuck... sos

I usually use my steam/jet wash cleaner with some liquid soapy stuff from B&Q. Just be careful of the flowers and plants. That was the kind of hard drive you meant wasn't it? Mines made of brick type thingies. they are quite hard.
