I have a iMac G5, and after 4 months the fan was really noisy. I call the Apple Care Line and they told me the same, that was a software problem and they told me some thing i could try, but after 4 days my computer stop working, and the thing was this. The temperature monitor of the computer was damaged, and that cause that the fan works faster than usual, and that cause that the logic board burned. Lucky me the computer was under warranty, so Apple took care of everything. My computer is a Power PC G5 that run under a really Hot Processor, but may be it could be the same thing. Take it to warranty and make them fix it before something burn on the inside and then they keep the computer for weeks fixing it.

Software problem? Who are they kidding! In any case, at 8 months, it should be their problem. Fan failures are cheap to fix and can cause huge damage if left to fail completely. We had a bad batch of low profile CPU coolers, when their bearings failed the fan stopped and the processor got fried.
Fans only cost a few bucks, even for a good one. Open it up and see which one is causing the noise. 40mm and 80mm fans are typically around $5.

How can it be a "software problem"? IF it's still under warranty, take it back,if not, check the screws holding the fan base.

I suggest you buy the used Mac Mini since you don't need a secondary display (one which you can't even connect other devices to in the first place) and also because the Mac Mini is an awesome HTPC.
