Hardware - October 2006

Webpages should appear instantly but they're always sluggish and like take 5 seconds to load (cable modem). Things on this computer are just really sluggish nowadays. What can I do to fix this? Get things back to the way they should. We have three users, usually only one logged on at a time.

PLEASE do not answer with the usual things like:
Defrag
alt/ctrl/del
msconfig
regedit
running processes
I already know about all this stuff so please don't post it just to get points or I'll report as abuse

I have intel 915 gav m/b, 3 GHz HT processor,512 mb ram. Recently I have installed windows vista rc1 on the machine. After installation everything seems fine but for sound. When I play any audio file, there is no sound though it seems to be playing the file in the application. I checked device driver also but it does not show any problem (no yellow mark). Please help!

I've got 3 partitions on my 250GB Maxtor HD (C: programs; D: + E: personal data).
when I upgraded my computer with some more RAM, it got a bit 'hicky' (wouldn't start properly and so on), until it wouldn't start at all. After reinstalling WindowsXP on a second HD, I tried to save my data (D:) still with the new RAM in. But this messed up my computer totally. Since then I have no access at all on D:. When starting the computer it wants to run chkdsk, but without success ('chkdsk aborted').

--> How can I get my data back?
--> Where can I find the second MFT on my disk?
--> How can I copy the 'good' MFT at the place of the bad one?
--> Is there any program out there that could help me (I wouldn't mind a free one)?
--> Am I right, that it was the RAM's fault (not writing back correctly all the datas)?

it might sound foolish but then, i've never owned a scanner so i'm completely ignorant. do you need an ink for the scanner to work? i think no but i might be wrong. does it run on electricity? batteries?

oh, and since i'm planning to finnaly get one, what are the things i need to consider? how do i choose an affordable yet good scanner? thank you.

I have a Canon MP780 printer. I have blue, red and yellow and 2 different black tanks. One is BCI-6 black the other one is BCI-3 black. When I print text, the BCI-3 ink is used. For what is the BCI-6 black? What is the difference between these two blacks? BCI-3 black, red, yellow, blue is empty, BCI-6 is just 50% empty.

I have a Canon MP780 printer and I use BCI-3 black. The whole ink was used so I bought ink to refill. When I inject 4ml or more the ink tank leaks. Does anybody know how to refill ink tanks without problems?

i recently had a misshap with my p.c,i was on the p.c the other day, i did a silly thing and placed my tea on top of the monitor, its the old fashioned type not the t.f.t one, well i accident knocked the tea over my monitor and it started smoking, i quickly turned the pc power off, i let it dry for a day then tried to turn it back on, it didnt work, so i got a second hand p.c from a pawn shop.so i want to know is it worth trying to get my first pc fixed as im sure my c.p.u is damaged too,or should i just dump it?

hi...i have a 16 gb file which i need to burn on a dvd.so im splitting the files into 4 dvds.im using a SONY blank dvd which can store upto 4.7gb data and im writing my dvds using TOAST TITANIUM (burning software)....the problem is that each time i try burning upto 4 gb on each disc my software does not respond.it seems to get hanged !!! so plz help, what shud i do ?? is there a problem with my iMAC G5 or the software TOAST ??? plz provide me a solution !!!

im installing fresh windows xp pro sp1 but during the setup it says im missing I386\KDCOM.DLL error code 4 , well now what do I do i dont have any boot disks and it already formated this once then it shut down because of power outage and then when it went back to boot from cd only i tried and this is only what i get now please help

Since some time whatever I do on my computer it's getting slower and slower. Even the smallest programs take eternity to start. I can hear how my hard drive is grinding inside. I defragmented the C:\ partiton hoping that will solve the problem but it didn't help. The computer is not that old, just 3 years plus I haven't really install any memory eaters. I do not have Corel nor Photoshop. I don't play games on it. Mostly it is used for work and surfing the web. I do have virus and spyware protection, maybe its just not enough? If this sounds familiar to anyone any advice wolud be appreciated. BTW I know how to recover the system, I am just trying to avoid all this work.

I am using samsung colour laserjet printer. If I print a word document it also prints tiny dots as background. So it is looking text with gray background instead of white. Is there any setting problem?.

I just got an HP Deskjet 5440. This is the first time I have tried to print a pic from an email. It took me into the "photo printing wizard". I have pics on this thing (at least 600) that I have no idea how they got there. Some are mine and should be there, others are from websites I have been on. I see no delete option to get rid of the pics I don't want. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

the s/w i have installed is of TV tuner card .i want to reinstall it .
before that i want to remove all ready existing one. though the message of sucess is prompting ,still i find that s/w in the settings/add or remove programs as usuall.
some ppl suggested that i have to remove the hardware too and and try..
how far it is suggestable.
