Stand by mode can sometimes not be possible if attached componants are not capable (eg. windows cannot power down)

Try unplugging USB items such as web cams and/or scanners etc. with them gone windows should be able to go into stand by as it can fully control the power down of all attached items.

Can you give more info on this:

Does the pc show the option to go into standby when you do the shutdown procedure?
Does it show the option but when you click on standby it doesn´t do that?
Do you mean it doesn´t go into the standby mode after a while being idle?

Yes...

Presumably you're using Windows. There should be an option under the Start /Shutdown menu. Mine says Hibernate.

If you have a Mac click the apple and choose Sleep (much easier).

when you click on the shutdown under the start menu, 3 options are given to you. now, if you press left ctrl (or could be left shift or a combination, cant remember), the buttons will change, allowing you to enter hybernate mode.
