the system you have got is ok if you want to play games pre 2000 but will not play the games after that
you best bet would be to go to a web site that sells componant parts .
you need a case with a 750 watt power a cpu of 3.4 ghtz or a dual core a mother board with 1 gb ddr2 memory and graphics card that has 256mb on board memery
you can buy this type of machine of the shalf

Ok...first, you totally CAN build for cheap. Second, I'll illustrate in detail about mine, and what it can do relative to the marketed games.
1. MoBo- two years ago, I bought a gigabyte RZ series 7vt600przc with a via kt600 chipset, for 129 bucks...and the processor was AMD Sempron 2200+ 1.5 g basically.
2. RAM- same time as above, got 2 sticks of 512 mb for 80 bucks.
3. Vid- ATI 9250 128mb card AGP, for 90 bucks(then). it was still pretty recent, but more importantly, in my budget.
4. PSU- got a Bulldog 350 watts, that was only 50 bucks.
5. Creative sound 24 card, 5.1- for 30 bucks.
So far, thats less than 350, and I was playing Lineage 2 and EQ...that was then. And they played nicely.
6. HD- got a 80g 8mb for 25 bucks from some guy on Ebay. it was new , but box was open.
As for other stuff...I payed 325 bucks (2 years ago), for a Avidant 17" flatscreen. lol, now i can see them for 150!
My speakers were just a simple set of desktop harmon/kardon's for 40 bucks.
So it can be done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dont let 'em fool ya!!!!!
And oh, theres lots and tons of building resource's available by litertures and the internet...so have at it and build a system for 500 bucks or so, best thing is that you will "know" your computers guts. so-to-speak. Its a blast to do, I had lots of fun.
g/l my friend.

No reason why you can't build your own PC as long as you have a little sense and are a little careful. The thing is, none of the components you have specified above are any good I'm afraid to say. In fact, you would probably not be allowed to take part in LAN nights or MMRPG as it's far too slow. You need at least a 3 Ghz chip 2Gb memory 250 Gb SATA disc 100Mb LAN card and the biggest best graphics card you can beg/borrow/steal. A big CRT monitor - no flat screens, too slow Oh yeah, don't stint on the power supply, if you do you'll just have problems later, and this is a MINIMUM spec these days

Since you've already decided not to build your own PC. Buy a new one. You will be able to upgrade some parts of your current PC but it will not reach game play standards. I doubt if you'd be able to play good level games from 3 years ago.

The spec that you'd be looking at now-a-days would be:

At least a 3ghz single core process (duo core/X2 would be better)
At least 512mb of Ram (1 or even 2 gb would be better)
A PCI-e graphics card with 128 mb (256mb would be better)
For the HDD, the more the merrier but one that runs at least 7200rpm.
A decent mobo, one that supports PCI-e (maybe an ASUS one)

Remember when it comes to gaming the faster & better the spec the better the game will run.

Hope this helps

First upgrade the RAM. That is the most cost effective upgrade to any PC that hasn't been upgraded yet. 512 MB will make it FLY, but a Gigabyte will make it launch into orbit. That should be possible for around $80 with a little research. Clean out and defragment your hard drive, and get hold of a copy of Registry Mechanic to clean out registry errors. If your hard drive is getting nore than 60%-75% full, you might think about adding another or replacing the 20GB with a 40GB or more.

I know I'm gonna get slammed for this, but as soon as the next gen consoles are out every few years you might as well get one of those. They are perfectly valid for games that come close to what PC's can generate and to buy an xbox 360 would probably cost you less than a top of the range graphics card and all the upgrades you need for your PC to make it into a gaming machine. I know most true gamers don't agree with consoles but PC's are moving so fast now that your obsolete too quickly. At least a console will satisfy your gaming needs for several years to come. You can always do your PC up for the media side (Photos, videos and pictures etc) to compensate and stream that stuff into your XBOX 360 or PS3 when that comes out.

I built my own PC but looking at what you can get now for the prices around I'd say go and buy one. If you're a novice, then with all the hassle and the time and the cost just put all the cash you have together and get a new one. There's some very good spec's around for reasonable prices, or wait till the Jan sales.

You cant polish a turd... lol

Upgrading inferiors systems is time consuming and ultimately not a good idea...

As i said in your previous Q, buy a new pc (dell do good offers) with a good processor and hard drive, and personally buy the other upgrades....

make sure you know exactly what motherboard the pc will have as this will determine what type of ram you need and if it has a PCI-express graphics slot...

any q's and i'll be happy to answer them rather than getting largely by the sounds of it, opinions of people who dont know rams from roms.

My advice to you is to wait until the new direct x 10 hit's the market - most next generation games will be making use of this facility so you will need a PC capable of using it.
I got my PC custom built from a web company called PCSpecialist - you choose all the specs you want and they build and deliver it - quite reasonable too.

If you are computer familiar, it would be best to build your own pc. Otherwise, go on over to www.tiger-direct.com for some pretty cheap nice computers, look for something with the specs of the following :

Amd Athlon 64 bit processor (2800 or greater)
80gb or greater hard drive
Pci-Express Graphics card
1 Gb of ram, expandable to 2, or 4
