I think you may be referring to older Compaq's, especially when it came to upgrading. I have a fairly new Compaq, under a year old & it works great. However it did come with of alot of software CRAP installed on it, especially Spyware, and I recently had to do a XP clean install. But that was the CRAP, not the machine.

My only Compaq experience was a few years ago and I didn't like it at all. It was my wifes PC and upgrading RAM etc. was nothing but a big hassel.

I'm not sure if they've improved since being acquired by HP but Compaq left a really bad taste in my mouth and now I don't even consider them as a viable source for any PC that I would buy.

I did buy my wife a Dell and it's been a good PC so far. The only "hassle" I had was trying to install a floppy drive. They even had code written into the bios to preclude the floppy from working until you had all the correct codes/key strokes. I had to call Dell Support in order to buy the bracket and cable to install and get the floppy working. You can't even install a 2nd hard drive unless you buy a bracket from Dell for it.

Upgrades etc. are the real problems with buying from the national brand manufacturers. They set up their PC's so that you have to constantly go back to them and spend more money when you want to improve on the PC. That's how they "protect" their business base.

I prefer having my PC's built by my local computer store or I build them myself.

Guess I got off on a litte rant there. 'nuff said.

I`ll tell you from my experience with both Compaq and Sony (Notbooks),
Compaq is a junk PC most of the in my opinion they try to reduce the quality of the parts in order to make there PCs cheaper

My old Compaq screen was loose then the screen went black, when i went to the service they told me that they dont have spare parts for it so i bought a Sony Laptop Vaio which is working perfect for me...

Sony is much better in quality not to forget the baterry life (4Hrs REAL)

So at the end i agree Compaq Sucks, HB Sucks

Sony and IBM -they changed the there laptops names now- and Dell are the best

Don't know what you a whining at, Compaq are now part of HP and they have improved over the past few years.

They have improved down to the fact they have HP parts in them with a Compaq name

I have never had a Compaq, but I haven't heard many say positive things about them. I think all brands have their own unique problems. It is six of one, and a half dozen of the other.

The main problem I had with mine was that it was EXTREMELY limited upgrade-wise (since they only gave me PCI slots for graphics). I made the best of it, though, and stuck a gig of ram in there along with the best card i could get for pci and a bigger HD. After that it wasn't TOO bad, but the lack of upgradability beyond that point was what bothered me.
