Laptop dvd drive not working, reads no media (cd,dvd)- just whirs and stops. I thought it was laser maybe so was thinking it needs replacing. Then I hooked up an external drive and the same thing happens! Only the OS cd works in the external drive. Can anyone PLEASE tell me what to do, because not even the manufacturer knows- they tell me to uninstall the drive (NB it is visible in window!l windows from scratch. Surely there is another way? Help please !!!

Is this a computer that is attached to the internet? If so I would be looking at virus related fixes. A lot of viruses are for nuisance value, make your icons stop working make drives not respond etc. Update your antivirus and then do a full scan of your computer and then try your onboard dvd player again and see what happens. What have you got to lose?

buy a lens cleaner about 7 bucks at walmart ect.
right click my computer, properties,hardware,device manager,dvd,cdromsright click uninstall, restart computer you will get the new hardware found dialouge then try it
if it dont work take it to a local shop
