1. Speed up to 50X, by installing and running the FREE http://pclinuxos.com

(Microsoft Corporation switched ALL 45,000 computers to Linux, for all of the Hotmail.com, Microsoft.com, MSN.com, and the 400 Linux Lab testing units at Redmond Campus!) This was done over the time frame of 1997 to 2005. Hey, it works for NASA, Oracle, the Fortune 1,000, and Google!

2. You could see a minor speed increase, if you have 128Mb of RAM or less, and you increase that to 256Mb or more.

3. If you are able to open the case of your desktop computer, verify that the CD/DVD rom (s) are on their own IDE cable and that the hard drive(s) are on the separate IDE cable. If a CD is on the same cable with the (100 to 166Mhz) hard drive, then, the hard drive runs at the slow connect speed of the CD, usually 33 Mhz.

I have seen a lot of cheaper white boxes and eMachines that, in the past, 'saved' money by leaving out that one tiny, cheap, IDE cable!

Many namebrand (Dell, HP/Compaq, Microtel) computers can be ordered with the faster Linux already installed, but, only on Corporate Purchases. The rest of us pay the Microsoft Tax, and then we are expected to pay the "Microsoft Stupid Tax"!

Well frankly the answer is you need around 3000-4000 USD.

AMD x64 processor ( 750 - 800 $ )
4 gig of DDR2 RAM ( ZION ) ( around 500 - 800 bucks )
any SLI supporting mobo by asus for 939 pin ( 300 $ )
Nvidia G force 7800 GT sli ( 1 gig in SLI ) around 1000 $
a descent cabinet by I ball ( 100 $ )
Logitech G7 mouse & keyboard ( 300 $ )
DVD RW by ASUS or Lite On ( 80 - 100 $ )
400 W SMPS ( 100 $ )
HDD ( Maxtor or Seagate ) SATA 200 gb or 400 gb go for the one ready for SATA 3 @ 10000 rpm with atleast 6 or 8 mb cache.
That ( 500 $ )

If you can aford this buddy then go for it you gonna build the big daddy of all. A computer like this is gonna cost you like 7000$ if you buy from alienware. The prices that I have given are very approx. I have'nt checked the recent price of them. Try tigerdirect.com or newegg.com you can get it for a lot cheaper I guess. A computer like this is not gonna take more than 15 sec to boot.

buy parts
and build it
companies like Dell and Alienware don't exactly have the fastest parts in the world right now
Here is the list of parts
Intel Core 2 Xtreme X6800
4gb XMS Dominator PC8888
2x Geforce G8800 GTX (coming soon)
PC Power & Cooling 1kilowatt Power Supply
Seagate Cheetah 15,000 RPM harddrive
blue-ray cd-rom
phase changer for the X6800
and a 570 series motherboard

that adds up to about 8000

Assuming that you mean to speed up your current computer...

1. Clean out the junk that's there already. Every program that is running 'eats' up resources. Uninstall what you don't use, and check to see what is 'automatically' starting when you start your computer
Start / All Programs / Start up
or
Start / Run
msconfig
(be careful with this one, you could mess up your computer if you don't know what you're doing)

2. Check your disk for errors and defragment
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools /

3. Add RAM. It's quick, relatively inexpensive and gives a power boost to your machine.

If you are using Windows XP, there are a number of tweaks which you can perform to get better performance out of your PC, depending on your requirements.

Many of these are very easy to do and can significantly speed up your system, particularly if you have a lot of unnecessary programs running in the background (loading with windows on startup).

For a guide on how to tweak your XP machine for optimal performance, go to:
