years ago it was used for your mouse,cameras and a host of other things that are now days hooked into your usb ports

The 9 pin serial port is used some computer dependent equipment. At work the time clock is attached to the port.

The serial port is a 'legacy' port on your computer's motherboard used to support older mice, modem and other peripherals.This has a low data transfer rate and now is rarely used. It has been largely replaced by USB ports and Firewire(though this has not lived upto expectations in terms of popularity).Even mice nowadays dont use serial ports,instead they use PS/2 port.
