Computer Networking - February 2007

I'm having issues accessing my internet. When I type "ipconfig" in my CMD window, it will alternately give me an IP address, and then an IP address of 0.0.0.0

I've tried repairing my Local Area Connection, I've disconnected my cable internet, restarted my computer, talked through the issue with COMCAST, and they've decided that it's my computer's inability to maintain an IP address that is causing the problem. I've run my Spy Sweeper and AntiVirus, with no luck- my computer came up clean.

I spoke to HP, who wouldn't help me because my warranty has expired. The only other solution (and last resort) is to reset my computer to a previously saved configuration, and hope that my IP settings haven't been altered there as well- and I don't want to do this until I'm absolutely sure that there is no other solution.

Is there any other way to repair this?

I am just about to purchase a new Desktop and Laptop for my business, I'll be using my desktop 80% of the time, and the laptop about 20% and it would be extremely helpful if I can access all the files on my desktop from my laptop via wireless internet when I have clients in as my meeting room, they need to be kept out the office for confidentiality reasons.

Is there anyway I can do this? I don't want the hassle of a server or anything. Can I get wifi network cards that will talk to each other?

Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

Whenever i attempt to join a freshly reinstalled winXP machine to my win2k + win2k3 domain, i get the following error: The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "rivin.net":
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. I have already verified DNS at least 10 times. I can ping all DC's involved, i can open authenticatd SMB sessions with all DC's involved. There are no firewalls on the internal network, I was able to successfully join a new win2k3 server to the domain without any problems. Any Ideas???

My laptop has WiFi built into it and I can get on Linksys wireless network already, but the signal is low. Could an antenna help??? Any answers are helpful!!

I have a Linksys WRT54GS router and two Windows PCs hooked up to that. On a third machine, I removed Windows and installed Ubuntu 6 instead (Edgy). I must say that I do like Linux! Is there any way I can get my new Linux box to hookup to my existing home network?

If not, is there a way I can put all three of the machines on a single home network (ideally wireless because of where they're located in the house; different floors and such).

I'm open to various options (hub, switch, whatever).

Thanx!

i am hooking up cable internet to both my computer and xbox, it is cheaper to buy two cable modems than the whole wireless thing, so i am wondering, can I use two cable modems in one house from the same cable line in two different rooms?

I'm building a small network where my router has 2 ports, so if I attached my computer to one port and then the other port was dedicated to a 4 other computers through a switch, does it mean the bandwidth "1Mbps" will be divided to two halfs where I get "512Kbps" for myself and the rest "512Kbps" for the other 4 computers or we all the 5 computers have the same bandwidth?
