I'm following an online guide to do "port forwarding" to make some downloads faster for some program. It says I need to set up a static ip address and port forward it, and it gives me a guide about setting one up. I followed it exactly and typed in everything right and it said "if you cannot get access to the internet, you probably have the wrong dns addresses" even though I got it straight from the ipconfig /all.....It says I should call my ISP and they will be able to tell me the correct ones to use, and I tried it and they wouldn't give it to me and acted like they didn't know what I was talking about. I explained (a bit) and they said "we have dynamic IP addresses and they change everyday"....anyone know what I should do now?

My laptop keeps droping my network and tries to connect to a network thats in range. My network is 54 mbps the other is 108 mbps. My network and the other network are password protected(WPA-PSK). Mine is netgear the other I don't know. I've set settings to connect too mine when in range, but it keeps choosing the "other" network over mine. Of course it can't connect to other network. I'm running XP pro. What can I do to stop this?

How long should a wireless router last? My first one lasted about 18 months and my second one looks to be about the same (it's fading fast).

There are 12 computers in a classroom, but only 2 electric outlets. Can we connect an extension cord to another extension cord?
I'm more concerned about safety. The computers have been running with no problems. The outlet is too far from the computers, that's why we have to use two extension cords/surge protector to be able to reach. How do I find out about amps?
I have 6 computers connected to one outlet and the other 6 connected to the other outlet through 2-6ft surge protectors.
Thank you guys for all the help.

Is there a standard way to calculate the distance an antenna will transmit providing you know the rating of the antenna (assuming no obstructions between the antenna and the power source)?
Thanks,

My uncle just gave his old laptop (Dell Inspiron 630m). I'm a newbie to laptops. I'm not sure about every thing, so bear with me, ok? I'm not sure how to connect it to the Internet. Could you give me some help? (I think there is this wi-fi or something like that in the laptop)
At home, I have this wireless router (if that helps).
In the system tray of the laptop, there's this icon, and then it always says there is a network nearby or something like that. Also, I know my SSID, but on the Wireless Network Connection window, it doesn't show mine. Is it supposed to show there?
(how do I find the network key from my desktop computer?)
Sorry if this is confusing. THANKS!

I have a desktop computer and my daughter has a wireless laptop computer. We have never had any trouble until today, when her wireless just will not connect at all. We made no changes on anything. It's been working fine for months with not a days down time. Can anyone tell me in 'layman's' terms what might be wrong, and how I can go about fixing it. She uses her computer for school daily, so we really need to get her back up and running. Thanks!

We have standard pc connected to orange broadband...We have just bought a laptop...what do we need to do to get online? I know we can plug into our current connection but then we have to install it? And I know we need a router but do you just buy one and then it uses the current connection?
And how do you connect by just picking up close wi-fi signals? don't you need to have the providers disk installed?

Thanks
