NICs (Network Interface Controller) cards usually only cost around $25. In fact, this one from Walmart is only $18.

Wireless cards, if you use a wireless router, will cost a little bit more, but not too much.

See if on your laptop there is a small, very rectangular slot (About an eight of in inch by about 3 inches) on the side of your laptop somewhere, and if there is then get a Laptop Wireless networking card (It will most likely be brand D-link, NetGear, LinkSys, etc) and purchase that and follow the manufacture's instructions on how to install it. This card is around $20 for a cheap one, which will work just fine.
Then, get a wireless router (NOT a modem or switch or anyhting else, and it HAS to be wireless unless you plan on being in the same room as your son) (It will be D-link, NetGear, etc. but it doesn't need to be the same brand, for instance NetGear and D-Link equipment will work with eachother) and follow the manufacture's instructions. on how to install it. This piece is about $20-$30.

Total Cost: about $50.

*Note: If you get both NetGear equipment, the newer ones have an easy set up button, which if you don't know very much about tis stuff that would be best. It's a single-push-button setup that configures everything for you.

Well you can by a networking card from about 20-80 bucks and if one is on sale you may even get it cheaper than that. You could also get a LAN line which lets you hook your computer to his modem giving you Internet. If you are think about getting a computer almost all lab tops have a built in networking card. You also need to make sure your son has wireless Internet as well.

Don't now for sure if your Thinkpad has a PCMCIA slot (it SHOULD) so you could get either a Wired or wirelss card for that slot.
