I am just about to purchase a new Desktop and Laptop for my business, I'll be using my desktop 80% of the time, and the laptop about 20% and it would be extremely helpful if I can access all the files on my desktop from my laptop via wireless internet when I have clients in as my meeting room, they need to be kept out the office for confidentiality reasons.

Is there anyway I can do this? I don't want the hassle of a server or anything. Can I get wifi network cards that will talk to each other?

Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

probably the best solution is a wireless connection
im not certainif you can connect to wireless adaptors directly or whether youhave to go through a woreless ggateway.. in any event the cost isnt siognificant... it should be arounf £20 for a woreless card or usb device & at most £40..50 for the wireless gateway

one thing to be very carefull abiut is network security. make sure you follow all steps reccomenede to secure the netwrok
make sure that you limit access to stuff they should have.

if you are concerned about security then consider putting in a peer to peer network.. sounds grand it isnt. you can connncet 2 netwrok enbalke ddevices suign eithe a cross wired patrch cable or conventional ethernet cable going to a switch or hub. the advantage of the cable route is that you know no one else can get one the network.. soemthing you can never be sure of on a wireless network

In order to do that, you would need to purchase and install a wireless router. Cost in the US$40-60 range, and available just about anywhere. The router would attach to your desktop computer, and then would broadcast a wireless radio signal that your laptop can pick up. (Your laptop will have to have a wireless card in it to receive the signal.) Once you have set up the network, you can share files between that two computers up to a distance of about 150 ft (50 meters). If you have high speed Internet coming into your office, you can also use the router to allow both the desktop and the laptop to be on the Internet at the same time.

(While a data transfer cable could be used. you would be limited to having to be within a few feet of the desktop, and have a cable strung between them. You probably do not want to do that. You would be better to go with the wireless router)

So long as the wireless reaches the meeting room, as in it is not that far from your office then you just have to share your files with your laptop from you desktop, as you make sure that you only share with your own laptop it should be secure, all you need is a wireless card for your laptop connected to the wireless router.

1- A wireless ADSL-Router.
2- Network Card( wireless), this card will be installed in your Desktop.(if you have lan-cable already then don't buy this card)

Now, assuming that your ADSL has been configured and ready to use. please do the following:-

1- right-click on "My Computer" Icon, select "properties"..click on " Computer name"..click on "Change".. Select " workgroup"...type your desired name for it"XYZ". press okay and restart it...

2- the above procedure should be done on both Laptop and Desktop.
.............. At this phase, both Laptop and Desktop are connected to each other via wireless router....................

3- on your desktop, select the desired folder to be shared, so that when you meet clients your Laptop shows you the shared folder on desktop.

4- Try the above procedures and do it very slowly. Its very easy to build your own small private in-house network.

good luck pal

First of all u need to purchase wireless NIC and Wiress router- access point for office and home PCs. configure and install them. then consult your net work service providers to connect u. however, u can also connect it to internet and save your work as e-mail that u can access from home.
(Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)
A new modem technology. Converts existing twisted-pair telephone lines into access paths for multimedia and high-speed data communications. ADSL transmits more than 6 Mbps to a subscriber, and as much as 640 kbps more in both directions.

I've been in IT for 7 years the best answer is "chorpocketchor"

..if you do not know how to share a folder and viewing the share folder on another PC or laptop it is easy....first create a folder preferably on the c drive right click it go to properties select sharing select share this folder. if your share folder is on your desktop PC and you want to view the folder on your laptop PC you will need to know your desktop computer name to do so RIGHT click my computer lft click properties and lft click the computer name tab. keep your desktop computer name in mind go to your laptop click start click run type:(2 back slashes) \\ and the desktop computer name with no spaces in between follow by a back slash c$ it should look like this: \\XYZ\c$......or you can do \\xyz\sharedfoldername. you will be able to open, save, edit documents on your shared folder from your laptop. as long as your desktop is left on. (you can log off your profile but leave the power on the desktop) or simply lock it up crtl +Alt Del and press K to lock it up. (on professional) good luck dude also if you want the same way you shared your folder you can share a printer so you can print wirelessly from the laptop. install a printer on your desktop PC share it. on the laptop go to run \\computername click ok double click the printer and you are all set.
