Whenever i attempt to join a freshly reinstalled winXP machine to my win2k + win2k3 domain, i get the following error: The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "rivin.net":
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. I have already verified DNS at least 10 times. I can ping all DC's involved, i can open authenticatd SMB sessions with all DC's involved. There are no firewalls on the internal network, I was able to successfully join a new win2k3 server to the domain without any problems. Any Ideas???

You need to make sure your account has been given access to join the domain. A normal user account is not authorized to join domains. Only an administrator account is authorized join domains. From there you need to add your normal user account into the domain. Then you would be able to log into the domain.

Several.

Since you successfully joined the W2K3 box, the problem is probably with the XP box, not the domain.

Disable windows firewall on the XP machine. Though your network may not be firewalled, the XP machine is by default.

Make sure your local DNS server is the default DNS server for the XP box. Give the XP box a static IP and manually input all the data (the problem could be DHCP, not DNS).

Make sure the admin$ is correct (administrative share for the windows directory).

Especially if you're using small business server, try creating the computer account in active directory first, then join the computer to the domain.

Make sure there's no third party security software running that can prevent data execution or create a firewall.

Make sure data execution prevention is turned off on the XP box.

Don't try to change the computer name and join it to the domain at the same time (don't ask me why. Sometimes this crashes for absolutely no apparent reason). Change the name, reboot, THEN join to the domain.

i grow to be going to objective a clever acrostic to respond to yet, to respond to your question. Line 2 -- drop the on and positioned a comma. each and every thing else -- appealing; i admire the ending. i've got consistently liked non rhyming poems that end on a rhyme; it extremely is a solid ultimately.
