ok, so we just bought two new laptops for our home. we are replacing our desktop with the two laptops. We just bought a wireless router, but before I set up a home network, is there any way that I can get my laptop online without networking it? My laptop has WiFi built into it and I can get on Linksys wireless network already, but the signal is low. Could an antenna help??? Any answers are helpful!!

If you haven't connected your router, and you're picking up a weak signal, you'd better ask your neighbor before you pirate his/her connection. Set up your own router to your own account. And, make sure you encrypt it, or other people can access yours. Linksys can walk you through it.

You can also connect the laptop to your current connection - modem, land line, etc.

Yes an antenna probably would help, also if your going long distances, like say 50 , 60 ft. you can buy what they call a repeater. make sure you buy it vrom the same company that made the router. and put it in between your router and the place you use your computer. some other things that might cause low signal are walls, microwaves, wireless phones, even TVs and other computers, or metal bars directly inbetween you and the router could effect signal strength.
for sucurity, go in to your router settings and make sure your wireless is using wep or wpa encription, so other people cannot get on your network, and put a firewall on your laptop.
