It all worked fine but suddenly I can't see the network. The computers on the network can still use the shared printer and the shared folder that is mapped on one of the computers but they can't even see themselves in network places. I've search the net and tried it all, e.g. Enabling Netbios over TCP. Totally stumped by the problem.

It says there are different types of ethernet cables:
-straight-through cable
-crossover cable
-rolled cable

I looked online and the 3 cables look the same from outside.

The book goes on and says each type of cable is used to connect two different equipment. And, crossover cable is the one we use to connect a host and a router. My question is when I went to buy an ethernet cable (RJ-45) at best buy (to connect between the router and my machine), I didn't have to ask the workers whether it's crossover or not. I plugged in the cable and it has been working fine.

So, right now I wonder if I happen to be lucky to get the right cable or is there any good explanation behind it. Also, is the cable I have really is a crossover cable?

Say, if I happen to have a rolled or straight-through cable, would it have worked if I were to use it to connect between a router and my machine?

So confused.
Thanks in advance.

I have a 2.4 wifi connection connected to my Verizon DSL line.

I have (4) 5.8 Ghz phones, all connected to the same phone jack (Uniden system, base and 3 handsets), and all othe phone lines (Sat TVx2) connected throug DSL filters.

Whenever I make or receive a call, the DSL drops out. The WiFi connection stays on, but the DSL drops. I end up having to reset the DSL (Westell) modem after nearly every call. Rarely (1 of 10) a DSL will not drop, and I can continue fine.

Any ideas?

I just installed ubuntu on an old computer of mine, and now I'd like to set it up as a LAN web server. I'm going to install LAMP, which I think I can manage, but after that I'm a bit lost.

Beyond installing apache, what things will I need to do to allow incoming connections?

I have several CAT5 ethernet cables and a router... can I somehow connect these together so that my other computers can connect to the server?

Would I hook the server into the "Internet" slot of the router?

Alternatively, could I simply connect one computer to the server with a CAT5 cable?
