Yes. If you're using your network for gaming this may help improve your video game performance; however, if you want better security, I would recommend dynamic IP addresses where IPs get renewed over a certain period of time to reduce the chances of hackers getting into your computer. Another thing that you can do is to set one of your computers as what's called a Gateway or gaming computer if you prefer. That way, only one of your computers is fixed while the other computers on your network have less chance of being subjected to nasty stuff! I would also suggest anti spyware, anti virus software, and a good software firewall behind this main computer for extra security. Good software programs will let you create special tunnels through your network to allow certain sites that you enjoy (like games) while disallowing all other network traffic. Firewalls used to slow down performance, but I think they've come a long way now but you do need to learn a bit about them in order to program them properly; otherwise, your performance will slow down in exchange for the extra security.

honestly, none of this makes any experience. no longer particular the way you've a valid criminal internet connection with no modem. ISP cord? the position is it coming from? immediately from the wall? A field with lights? you may both have cable which appears like a television cable, or you've ADSL which used an time-honored sized telephone jack cord. both way, those does no longer connect to a router. you'll have a gateway, that is a router/modem. what's the emblem and style of all of your contraptions? also, IP can in effortless words be assigned to at least one gadget. considering that that 172.17.142.xx IP is inner most handle, use 172.17.142.yy the position yy is any huge style from 2 to 250 (merely to be danger-free, no longer particular what IP your router is making use of). My head hurts now....

To evaluate on that. you *CAN* use it on static IP addressing, however you MUST use the subnet range 192.168.0.x
and set the gateway to 192.168.0.1
That will allow you to do it. For some reason MS connection Sharing only works on that subnet.

Make sure that your default and secondary gateways are the ones provided by your ISP/network administrator!
