if i bring my laptop to work and access internet through wireless internet or plug into a phone line would they be able to access my docs or see what i am doing because i am not using their computer but i am using their internet.

They won't for as long as you disable file/printer sharing on your laptop. Make sure that you are not part of the domain of your workplace. Otherwise, admins of the work system may be able to access your files/folders.

Depending upon how the work network is set up, it may not even work at all. If someone brings in a home computer where I work, they won't get access to the network, let alone the internet.
