First you need to know, not only can you now get in trouble legally for using someone's wireless connection without permission, but that also, picking up connection on open network(no security) will make you wish that you had not after you infect your computer and become introduced to identity theft. Sorry, can't help you do something wrong like that.

You need a couple of things:-

* You neighbors permission to join in.
* Your neighbor has to give you the WEP coding he uses to keep people out of his network.
* You need to be relatively close to his house otherwise you need a more expensive antenna (maybe at both ends).
* You need line of sight with no trees or buildings in the way.
* And probably a wireless card rather than the router (unless you can set the router into another mode).

If they broadcast wide open, it is a 'given' that you are welcome!

It requires only one click or maybe a couple of clicks, by your neighbor, to invoke encryption on their wifi network, or to have named only networking, or to only allow certain MAC addresses!

So, if it is open radio broadcasting, it is FREE wifi networking!

but, if you intend to use a wifi router/hub, to try to get onto anetwork, you really need to also purchase a BRIDGE router so that it spans the two units, for connections.

Otherwise, you simply scan with the NIC in your computer! No wifi hub/router or Bridge needed!

I don't think you have studied enough of the FREE info on the Internet, at various manufacturers' websites and the school tutorials to even get onto the internet!

Do some searching of these terms you asked here, in google!

Put the Wireless Router back in the box and return it. You don't need it.

If there is an open wireless hotspot within range, it will be detected by your wireless NIC automatically. If if doesn't find anything, there's nothing within range. In that case, you'll need to get your own internet access.
