unfortunately that is the world of dial-up access. the V.44 data compression algorithm used on the new V.92 modems is not much better than the old V.42bis found in older V.90 modems..

I would check the service contract with your ISP and see if you can upgrade to residential ISDN. I'm surprised that you are even connecting at 45.2K as it seems you are in a rural area.

Hi Chris,
By the nature of Dialup you are actually connecting at 56 Kilobits not Kilobytes per second. So to translate that in to Kilobytes per second you would be looking at 56 / 8 (8 bits to a byte) which means the *theoretical* maximum speed of a dialup connection is actually around 7Kilobytes per second (although sometimes under the right conditions that can be pushed slightly higher).

The reason your modem may connect at 45.2 Kilobits per second could be due to line noise on your telephone line, distance from the exchange or a range of other factors.

I have to say that the installation fee is *indeed* too high, so I would bee looking for a different providor.

But unfortunatly you will *never* get 23K on dialup.
Regards
Stuart

Your ISP is probably "oversubscribed" if you're only getting 5 - 17 kbps throughput. Complain to your ISP, that's about it.

If you're gauging that by download speed, keep in mind that downloads are usually reported as KiloBYTES, not KiloBITS. On dialup, there are 11 bits per byte, allowing for spacing and control bits.

If you're getting a download rate of 5 KiloBYTES, you're doing very well indeed. You'll only see 17 KiloBYTES when downloading highly compressible files.

The simple truth is that you are getting the fastest that you are able to get. I have had dial up before and have conneted at a lower rate and at a higher rate than 45.2k but where I am going at is that you are far enough away from the phone company's hub that that is all you are going to get.

Yep, that sounds about right for dial-up...there are web accelerators out there that can help some, (google web accelerators) but unless you have access to broadband DSL or Cable...there isn't much better without going Satalite :(
