I have a desktop and a laptop at home. I might soon add another laptop. I have a DSL connection. Please guide me, what kind of router could be good for me? I have also learned about firewall feature for routers. Should I buy one with that?

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any info about networking two home computers to achieve multiprocessing results...
Basically, I'm wondering if its possible to use two obsolete computers to achieve performance that would normally come from a single modern unit.
I have a number of old 300 - 500 mhz computers, and I was thinking that if I could combine a couple of them, I could have a 1 to 2 ghz system, but I havent found any info online about software that can or will run on such a system.
Also, any info about networking computers using VERY inexpensive methods would be useful as well. Perhaps if anyone knows anything about netowrking over a standard parallel printer cable (yeah I know, parallel printers are obsolete too) I'd like to see that info.
Just general info about networking, multiprocessing and such applicable to older, somewhat out dated equipment would help to more or less degree.
Thanks

Ok heres my setup.
Cable Modem > WRT > PCs (wired + wireless)

i came across a DI-624. Now, how would i go about adding this to my setup to allow me to have one router downstairs and one upstairs, connected wirelessly (for my xbox as well as another wired PC). Basically, use one or the other as a bridge.

Any help is appreciated

Me and my brother just installed Linux today me on my desktop and him on his laptop. We both have wireless cards installed and connect to the internet through them. First he installed Ubuntu but it didn't detect his wireless card so he installed Kubuntu, but that didn't work either. When I installed Kubuntu on my computer it installed the wireless card automatically. He installed Linux on a newer laptop that came with the wireless card installed, it was working just fine before he installed Linux

Okay, its simple, when i am wireless, i have 54.0 mbps (NOT MEGABYTES, i wish, lol). And when im wired, i get 100mbps.
I get 2.7 megabytes wireless
I get 5 megabytes wired.
That is because of the diference in mbps?
If i buy a 108 router (to repace my actual 54) will wireless be able to match the wired speed?

I get 54mbps wireless and a "crappy" internet speed
when i connect by ethernet cable, my speed boost up to 2x (twice)
I think it is the router, duh, the fact that it is wireless.
But if I buy a 108mbps wireless router, will it be as fast as wired internet??

I have a wired conn with PC & a wireless conn with laptop, everytime in order to conn with the laptop, I'll need to access Belkin's settings to "Change Channel" to another channel before the laptop is able to conn, else it simply keeps trying to conn with the wireless modem, if I go direct via cable, no problems. What gives, please assist, thanks.

Ok! I have decided to buy a whole new router but this time a wireless router. I found some on ebay and a usb adapter for my desktop. I have an old campaq desktop computer with windows 98. Our main access to the internet is through the Laptop that connected by a usb cable to the modem. So all I need is the usb adapter for my desktop the is compatible with my router and I hook the router up to the modem with an ethernet cable... correct?

What is the difference between a pci adapter and a usb adapter? It seems a usb adapter is much easier for me to work with.

I am looking into a D-link router and a D-link Usb adapter. The usb adapter I am looking into says system requirements for it are windows 98SE etc. I have only windows 98. Can I still use that with just Windows 98. Never knew there was even a second edition and getting my hands on one is expensive.

Any advice... Thanks.

I have two laptops behind the same router. Both connect to the internet just fine. One is Windows XP Media Center Edition and the other is Ubuntu 6.06. I'm used to using Windows file sharing to share files between Windows laptops. I want to do something similar now between the Windows and Linux laptop. I just care about reliability, speed, and convenience, not security. What are my options and how do I do it?
