I have 2 USB ports, one with the modem in and the other with a multi adapter with the printer, fax/scanner and webcam in with 2 spare for digi cam etc uploads... Had no problems till BT unexpectedly increased Broadband speed from 2.2Mbps to 7.6Mbps. Now the webcam says it can't work due to lack of bandwidth...

I dont think you can free up bandwidth without unplugging the modem. You might want to try upgrading the USB on your PC (ideally, more ports and USB 2.0 )

Buying a whole new modem to go ethernet is an expensive option unless you want ethernet for other reasons.

Agree with everyone else that you need more USB ports. Buying a USB 2.0 card is one solution.

But check your motherboard: many have unused risers for two more USB sockets. These are intended to connect either to USB sockets on the front of the case, or to sockets on a blanking plate above a PCI slot at the back. This is potentially free (if you have the right connecting cables - again, motherboard-dependent), but won't get you to USB 2.0.

I agree with all above, try a USB upgrade to USB 2.0 much faster and the pci cards are not too pricey do a search for them at these sites...:)

You would have to get more USB ports. So your best bet would be to get a PCI card with USB 2.0. They're cheap as chips and much faster than 1.0

If you can, move your modem to an ethernet cable instead of USB. Modems are real USB hogs. Otherwise, you really need to upgrade to USB 2.0
