Ok! I have decided to buy a whole new router but this time a wireless router. I found some on ebay and a usb adapter for my desktop. I have an old campaq desktop computer with windows 98. Our main access to the internet is through the Laptop that connected by a usb cable to the modem. So all I need is the usb adapter for my desktop the is compatible with my router and I hook the router up to the modem with an ethernet cable... correct?

What is the difference between a pci adapter and a usb adapter? It seems a usb adapter is much easier for me to work with.

I am looking into a D-link router and a D-link Usb adapter. The usb adapter I am looking into says system requirements for it are windows 98SE etc. I have only windows 98. Can I still use that with just Windows 98. Never knew there was even a second edition and getting my hands on one is expensive.

Any advice... Thanks.

Windows 98SE is a networking upgrade over the origional 98. If you want to use wireless you will need to use win98SE or higher.

Also, if you are going to want to use your laptop you will need a wirless adapter for it also, unless you wire it using ethernet to the new router.

Also you should look at your modem. Does it only have a usb connection or does it also have a ethernet connection? A router can not plug into your modem if it only has a usb connection on it.

A PCI adapter needs to be installed in a PCI slot on your motherboard. This involves unplugging and opening your computer then checking for an empty slot and then installing the card. A USB adapter, as you know, is much easier to install.

You will need to upgrade to 98SE to ensure that the USB adapter will work. If you are able to try before you buy or find a place with an awesome return policy then you might be able to get away with making sure you have all the updates from the windows update website and trying the USB adapter to see if it works. However I wouldn't try it.

If you do decide to update to 98SE you need to find the update CD. The upgrade CD is for upgrading from 95. If you buy the 98SE upgrade CD you will be waisting your money. The update CD are very hard to come by. You best bet to find one is eBay.

The Linux OS guy has a great idea. You can upgrade to Linux. Some versions of Linux are as easy or easier to install than Windows. If you want to know more about upgrading to Linux and how to transfer your windows files over without loosing anything search past question or go ahead ask your own question.

A PCI adapter fits in a PCI slot inside your computer. Obviously a USB just plugs into a free USB port. So a USB would be easier. Do yourself a favor and buy Linksys products. Both router and adapter. It will be so much easier to setup with Linksys, especially since you run Win 98.

That seems right. A PCI card goes into a slot in the CPU whereas a usb plugs in the back. Usb would be easier. Look on ebay for a cheap version of Windows.

Well PCI is inside the computer. PCI Cards are connected to the motherboard with ports on the inside of the computer. USB or Universal Service Bus devices are connected to ports on the outside of the computer. USB ports can be used for many different things and can transmit data over high speeds and can even power devices

When you reset the router you must reset the modem at the same time. By resetting the modem you get a new IP address. Just resetting the router will send out the old IP address as a signal and will not connec t anywhere but will be detected by other units such as your laptop and DS Lite Unplug the power to both the modem and the router, wait a minute, and plug in the power to the modem and when 4 of the 5 lites are on; plug in the router. When it lights up, reboot the laptop and go online.

No. You'll need Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition. You can't even buy Microsoft Windows 98 anymore, and Microsoft stopped support for it a while back.

You could upgrade from Microsoft Windows 98 to Linux 2006 for free - then you could use the drivers direct from Ralink. Linux works just fine on older hardware too.
