As I understand any Ethernet Switch has a back-plane of say so many Gbps. I want to know what does this 'back-plane' means ? Beside, the technical meaning of 'band width' ina Ethernet Switch is the same as refered to 'back-plane" ? Kindly help me understand these terms fully, thanks.

I have an IBM Thinkpad Model T42. When I first got it from my company, Windows was in charge of handling the networking, both ethernet and wireless. Now for some reason, the Thinkpad is using it's own IBM Access software, and it's become very difficult to get a wireless connection.

How can I force the laptop to not use the IBM Access software, and use Windows XP SP2 to manage the network connections?

I don't want other people using my wireless connection. I notice there are several other Wireless Networks in my area but they are all "security enabled" and require a Network Key to access. How can I configure mine so that a user needs to use a network key? I seem to have gone into all the options I can find for Advanced settings, Firewalls etc. I've even changed the encoding to WEP and entered a Network Key but my connection resets itself back to Encoding: "disabled" and I am still on an Unsecured Network with "Open access". (I'm on Windows XP) Thanks for any help you can offer.

Do I set the password on the computer that has the router hooked to it, and how do I find out where to put the password? I looked everywhere to set the password but cannot find where or how. I am pretty computer savy but this baffles me because I can't find it.

better reception. Using my laptop downstairs only has 2 bars instead of 5. If I bring my laptop upstairs I get 5 bars. So what is the best way to have the router closer to me downstairs without having a cable running throughout the house?

If i make it avaible using the product stated above,it will be password protected, can i allow my family to access it legally. Like, i pay the bill and allow 3 other households access to it?

To start this off, yes, I have already tampered with the Windows settings. Utilizing the Windows features is an easy, practical, way. But the one thing is fore sure, it's not very 'secure'. (Sorry, Gates...) I need to disable things like "automatic updates, the 'Run' feature, deny access to the command prompt...the list goes on. So is there a '.bat' file or other executable (or similar) that i can create? (i.e if admin logs, then no limits; if 'user' logs, then limit to these...) How about, is there (free/cheap) software to do this with? (Should be self-explanitory). In either case, if you can, please provide a personal experience- and how you over-came it, and a link to a reference or an application download. Thank you to those who respond to topic.
