Cable by far is better.

DSL people try to tell you that bandwidth decreases for every person thats online with cable. Its not true with cable but it is true with DSL.

DSL runs over telephone pairs which are very small. Cable is thick and has more band width potential.

My cable company offers 6-8 meg downloads with burts of up to 12-16 meg. DSL here...offer 1.5 meg but you rarely ever get close to that speed.

My speed test came in at a whopping 6.8 meg you will NEVER see that with DSL on a good day a block from the central office.

This is so funny. Especially the last answer from Experienced Newbie. Now we all know and doesn't matter which you like that DSL will alway outshine cable, with one exception in most areas. That is cable does give you hundreds of TV cannels to watch. The phone company will do that in some areas. the other question is which is reliable. When was the last time your cable and your phone went out. Bet the cable has been at least once in the last year if not more and you can't remember when the phone line let you down. The T3 to T10 answer is correct much faster, but the cost. geeee. Cheapest and most reliable is DSL go for it

It all depends on where you are for the cable, and what service you get for the dsl. If you get expensive DSL, it can come as fast as any cable, if they offer premium services in your area. Cable all depends on how good your local company's equipment is, and how far away you are from the companys central location. I'm about a block away, and my home DSL is faster than the t1 at my work. There's also no such thing as T10, there's only five levels of T carriers. You can have ten bridged t-1s, or 2 bridged t-5s, but there's no 10th level T.

The closer you are to the phone companies sub station the better DSL is. If you are at the maximum distance for DSL, cable would probably be better. I have had both and I prefer DSL to cable. Cable tends to get crowded during peak hours and tends to slow down a bit.

As an networking industry professional, I can tell you that the question isn't enen close to formed properly for a truly accurate answer to be deliverable. Nevertheless, I've had both and am quite willing to share my experiences.

There are several different technologies that can be deployed that are called xDSL and there are several different technologies that can be deployed that are called "cable" modem.

The question didn't even begin to differentiate between them.

'IDSL" is a non-distance sensitive 144 kilobit per second in both directions stable circuit based on ISDN technology that has been available pretty much nationwide for incredibly high costs per month.

HDSL is a high-bandwidth DSL technology that probably has NOT been deployed in our neighborhoods, but it was developed to carry HDTV programming, so it's more robust than the 3 megabit DSL we do see in homes or the 6 megabit DSL we see in businesses. It can be seen in the 12-24 megabit range when and where it is available.

Cable modem, often 6 megabits to 100 megabits or more, again is hard to compare when no descriptor is given. My cable company is Cox Communications. They stand behind their advertising and live up to their promises, if they promise you X megabits, they deliver X or your money back.

My local phone company recently changed their name from Sprint to Embarq. They sold me 1.5 Megabit DSL and never delivered on 1.5 Megabits. They wouldn't fix that either. Getting within 80% of that rate was good enough for them. They don't deliver on their promises, and when I complained they threatened to force the rate down to 512K which meant 80% of 512K guaranteed.

The cable company did not require a contract, the DSL required a one year committment.

Cable was faster both in upload and download speeds. and had lower fees. It was also more reliable, and they lived up to their promises, without requiring a contract.

I saw no value in remaining on the DSL and cancelled the service as soon as the year was up. I ordered cable modem as soon as the DSL committment was over and have never switched back again.

DSL is better. The fastest cable out there is 15mb/s. But Verizon FIOS DSL offers 30mb/s. FIOS DSL IS TWICE AS FAST AS CABLE.
