I know this will sound stupid for some of you but how do you calibrate your spark plugs I already buy one of those gap things but how you do this you just open and close the wire or you have to twist it or how you do it if you have a web page where I can learn this you will be really helpful, thanks

I bought a 94 dodge ramvan that came to California from Montana, it's missing the cat. What are the requirments for an aftermarket cat in CA. Can I use a cat off an 80's dodge? Or will any OBDII compliant cat will work?

Thank you in advance

My 2001 explorer had about 1/8th of a tank of gas and I filled it up. The automatic shutoff did not trigger and I accidently topped the tank off. A few minutes after driving away from the gas station the car started shaking at idle, low speeds, and between 50-55. It feels like it wants to stall but it does not stall. I pulled over retightened the fuel cap (i think it was a little loose) and it still shakes. After starting the car again and driving for a few minutes the check engine light popped on. The car is still running very rough. Any ideas? Bad gas? Checked my receipt and I did put in regular unleaded (thought I may have put diesel in). Could topping off the tank have this effect?

2004 Nissan Maxima 3.5 Litre.
I recently purchased a 2004 Nissan Maxima. Every time I step on the accelerator heavy, the front tires spin, and it makes a thumping noise in the front end.

I am wondering if this is a sign of bad struts unable to keep the front tires down.

Thank you,
Phil

My car (Honda civic) is making a little high pitched dragging noise, mostly when I make a turn. It makes the noise for a couple of seconds & then stops. The noise just started & I am hoping to get some input before I go to the mechanic. Any info?

The check engine light on my '89 Geo Metro came on and has stayed on for the past few weeks, occasionally turning off by itself for a little while and then coming back on again. When I flash the codes, it comes up 51, which is Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit. I did all the tests in the Chilton and all the components: Value, Modulator and VSV seem to be working fine. I checked the vacuum coming from the throttle body which was 0 in. Hg at idle, but went up to 10 in. Hg or so as I pushed down the accelerator.

Should the vacuum be 0 at idle or does this indicate a vacuum leak?

When I put 10 in. Hg of vacuum on the ERG valve itself when running it moves drastically and the engine runs very poorly. When I warm up the car and put the vacuum gauge on the hose going to the EGR valve, I see that it does get about 10 in. Hg when I push the throttle down.

I'm rebuilding a 55 chevy pickup from the ground up. Right now I have everything off the frame. I'd like to paint the engine compartment the same color as the car body so that everything matches, but my dilemma is this - If I get it painted first I run the risk of scratching the paint when I drop in the motor. On the other hand, it'd be easier to paint with the motor out. Is there a recommended approach here? I'd like to put the motor in now because it's easier for me, but it'll be harder for the paint shop... suggestions???

I am considering opening an alignment shop. I don't plan to sell tires. given the choice would you use a shop that only does alignments or a shop that does alignments sells tire etc?
I have always considered selling tires and doing alignments at the same business to be a conflict of interest.

I have a 2000 Toyota Corolla with 125K miles on it. Within the last month, the Check Engine light has appeared. I had it diagnosed at a shop and the computer said the Oxygen Sensor and Catalytic Converter needed to be replaced and it would cost about $500. I have since taken it to a different shop, paid $260 to have the Oxygen Sensor replaced, but the light returned again after four days. When I called back, he said it probably wasn't the right "code" because Toyotas built within the last ten years don't normally have to have the Catalytic Converter replaced. Despite the fact that I work in IT, I can't comprehend that by changing a car part that is either dirty or damaged, the Check Engine light should not come back on after only four days if the car part is brand new. Now, I assume I'll have no choice but to take it to a shop, pay another $200 to replace the converter and then pray that the light does not return. Any thoughts or recomedations?

I own a 98 Honda Accord EX 4 cylinder. The problem that I am having is that the vehicle seems to lag off and on when I push the gas pedal. It never happens in reverse, only when I am moving forward. What will happen is I will put the car in drive and push on the gas pedal with constant pressure. The vehicle will start to go until it reaches about 3000-4000 RPMS. At this point the RPMS will drop to about 2000 and the vehicle feels as if I am not pushing the gas pedal at all. The next thing that happens is that a few seconds later the gas pedal will finally react to me pushing it and the car will have gas. This "surging" will last about 10 seconds until the vehicle shifts into the next gear. The "surging" usually only occurs after I start the car and begin to drive, but never for the first trip of the day. Any type of help will be greatly appreciated!

I have a 99 camry. I was coming onto the parkway today and i was going about 45-50 mph maybe 55 i dont remember my exact speed. But I was looking to see if any cars were coming so I can merge and I hit the curb. My car started shaking so I pulled over to the side of the road. After I calmed down I opened my door to see if the back tire was messed up because thats where I felt the damage after I hit the curb. Nothing was wrong and I couldn't see any rolling tires on the road. So I drove off slowly because I wasn't near my house. It was about a 4 minute drive going 40 mphs with the car shaking. When I put my foot on the brake the shaking stopped. So after I got home I looked at the back tire, its fine its not ripped, worn its just a little beat. I'm concerned about the front tire as it was totaled.
I'm a 17 year old girl, I know nothing about cars just how to drive the damn thing. How long will this take to fix? How much will it cost? Do I need to have my car towed?

My car (1998 Monte Carlo LS) for the past month has been having a problem that I'm still not quite sure what it is. It goes away for about three weeks and then comes back. It started after I spun out into a snow drift. I was pulled out and after about 20 minutes of driving the engine started surging really bad, and started backfiring. The RPM's were shooting all over the place all the way from 5000 to almost stalling out at 500. Then it will just die. I'll have to sit for about 7 or 10 minutes and then the car will drive fine for about another thirty seconds.

Another thing is when it starts sputtering and stuff I put my foot to the floor and it starts sputtering real bad, but doesn't die unless I let my foot off the gas. Then i have to sit for a little while again before the car starts.

I just bought a used '07 charger. a "brake" light started coming on and beeps every so often. this morning there was a puddle of red fluid under my car (towards the front ).

I have 2 questions.

1. Am I correct in assuming this is brake fluid?

2. If it is brake fluid, then I assume I have a leak somewhere... will this mean a major repair needs to be done or is it a relatively easy (not costly) fix?

Thanks in advance

I drive a 2000 Chevy S10, manual transmission. Lately, everytime I start it up, there is a clicking sound for about 3 seconds and then the same sound when it's time to shift. Any ideas on what it would be? I'm hoping it's not a cracked engine!! Help!

I had the tire patched but the gentlman at the repair shop warned me that the hole was very big and that I should get a new tire. He suggested $140 for a new tire, which I cannot afford at this moment. My question is, can this tire explode while I am driving the car? Or would the tire just deflate over time if there was any problem?
