My 2001 explorer had about 1/8th of a tank of gas and I filled it up. The automatic shutoff did not trigger and I accidently topped the tank off. A few minutes after driving away from the gas station the car started shaking at idle, low speeds, and between 50-55. It feels like it wants to stall but it does not stall. I pulled over retightened the fuel cap (i think it was a little loose) and it still shakes. After starting the car again and driving for a few minutes the check engine light popped on. The car is still running very rough. Any ideas? Bad gas? Checked my receipt and I did put in regular unleaded (thought I may have put diesel in). Could topping off the tank have this effect?

Thanks for your answers.
The car was not running while I was fueling. I plan to check the code tonight at autozone I hope it is a temporary problem because it was running fine before I refueled.

Check the charcoal canister under the hood. If it's saturated with gas you'll have problems.

topping off should not cause this problem. People do this all the time when they should not. What may be the problem is a dirty fuel filter. when was this last changed? If the check engine light is on have some read the code that was set. This will give you a clue as to what is wrong. Sample the fuel to see if it smell like gas, maybe the station filled their gas tank with diesel, it happens. Or sample the gas to see if there is water in the fuel. gas will float above the water.

There is a small chance it was just bad gas (water condesation in it). If the light came on, you can check the code by going to either an oil change station, or Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts, ect. They will be able to give you a rough guess of what the problem is, and what you might try to fix it.

There's a breather tube that goes to the charcol canister on the drivers side front fender area to the gas tank. More than likely this breather tube filled up with gas and saturated the charcol in the canister with gas.

It could fix it's self after a couple miles as the gas evaporates from the canister.

Drive it a little more and see what happens. Nothing bad should happen.

Topping off the tank would have nothing to do with it. Did you have leave the vehicle running while pumping gas? that could have done it! In that case it can short out your o2 sensor!
