Can cheap pads damage the rotor?
I have been goin nuts with my rotor warping ever since I put pads on last summer. Finally I put new pads and rotors on
that were Toyota. The "new" pads from last summmer were ceramic and had some minor cracks. Could this have been
the cause of my 9 months in rotor "hell" ? They were ceramic
btw and of cousrse after market. Brake shop kept turnin rotor
and telin me it was MY driving style and normal to toyoytas/

I drive a 1989 Chevy Celebrity. The head gasket is cracked and i'm told its going to cost about $800 to fix it (parts/labor) My mechanic said he's never seen anythingl ike it..i guess i have a unique problem.. I paid $500 for the car when i got it and other than that it pretty much works fine. I started leaking coolant awhile ago and paid $200 for it to get fixed then the Head gasket cracked (gonna cost $800 as previously stated). i'm wondering if there are any mechanics out there who could give me a recomendation on wether the car is worth paying the $800 for or if i shouold get a new 1...the only other thing i have to say is my big dilemma....

1. If i pay to get it fixed for $800 and something else breaks, i just spent A LOT of money on a car thats not worth it and will have to spend more.

2. If i buy a new car (probably for about $800 give or take a few hundred) , it could run fine and then something could go wrong and i would need to pay for that car to get fixed.

Just replaced starter on 85 Skyhawk 2.0L .

With the wire to the distributor off (so it won't start) the starter motor turns the engine smoothly. Once the wire is replaced, it cranks smoothly but as soon as the engine begins running on its own it lets out this terrible, terrible squaling-grinding noise. From what I can see under the car (very tight squeeze, by the way) the bendix is not properly disengaging.

Currently have 2 shims between block and starter measuring about 0.0700" Specs say no more than 0.065" should be required to maintain clearance of bendix gear and flywheel - yet even with more clearance the gear is only partially disengaging. (From what I can see, the gear is only engaged about 1/4 way into the flywheel gear)

Do you think additional shims might help or is there a more serious problem with the bendix not pulling out?

Thanks a lot

my car is a mercedes 350sdl (turbo diesel) about 200k miles on it.

Under the hood it looks really old and a mess, although the car runs well. There is i'm sure corrosion , although dont see much rust.

I was wondering how much an engine detailing / cleaning would cost and where I could get it done. Does it offer any performance benefits or is it simply aesthetic.

also I was wondering do you have to change oil filters when you change oil. If so what is a good filter brand for my car,

thanks)

I have a 1993 Honda Accord Lx automatic 4 door. yesterday, when i turn my car on, and started driving, i noticed that in the warning light with the picture of a car in the lower right corner of my speedometer and fuel gauge, it showed that all my doors were ajar, my trunk was open, and my brake light was bad (the brake light has said that sine i bought the car even after replacing the bulbs.

When i pulled over, i checked all the doors and they were fine, i continued driving, and they blinked on and off. they stayed off for a few minutes, then came back on. When i got home, i turned off the car and turned it bck on. None of the warning lights were on (except the brake light). then after a few seconds, they went back on.

Do you know what the problem is???????
I am worried that there is something wrong???????
Can a Shop run diagnostics when the waning lights are on and find out what the problem is?????????

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks.

I have a freeze plug that looks like it is right behind where the suspension connects to the block. Has anyone heard of this and how did they put the plug in?

The check engine light has been on since a few days after the car was purchased despite numerous "repairs" by the dealer. Have also had other problems such as defective emergency brake, car not starting and more. It is presently completely out of commission, can't start it, and laser ignition key will not even turn in ignition. Dealer will not even return my calls.

a few questions about turbo diesels...

what oil to use? Ive heard 15W40 is what I need. What oil filters to use? I read MAHLE ( ithink thats the spelling) is the OEM brand for mercedes and is high quality.

what other lubricants should I use (tranmission fluid, anti freeze, power steering) - mercedes brand or are other brands ok?

I was in the autozone today and saw these "fuel injection cleaners." I thought I remember these can be very bad for your diesel car?

Another question.
Before today it had been below 15 F for a few days. My engine was at max 85C. Today it jumped to like 55F, and I really felt my turbo kicking in. My engine was also around 90/95 C. Was the turbo "frozen" before? One thing that is kind of annoying now is from a stop light, my acceleration before was great. Now it is still good, but instead its more of an engine rev and then the turbo boost, its more delayed.

I heard something about aluminum parts in my car cracking above 85 C engine temp

Greetings all!

Today I spent the better of 4 hours changing the front brake pads on my Altima. I wanted to change my rotors put I couldn't pull them off, either side. I whacked them with a rubber mallet, used a bunch of WD40, but I couldn't get the darn things off.

Any advice out there? I should would appreciate it.

Thanks,

I know because of the cars age there is going to be fresher un-faded paint underneath that hasn't been exposed to the elements thus creating a "shadowing effect". Just wondered if there's a process possible to remove this (without re-spraying) or whether i shouldn't bother at all lol.

I just got a new batery for my car about 2-3 weeks ago, now I can't get my car started without jump starting it. I took it to get tested at AutoZone and they said eventually I will need a new starter, but everything looks fine for now...would the starter be the cause of my batery dying?
