my car is a mercedes 350sdl (turbo diesel) about 200k miles on it.

Under the hood it looks really old and a mess, although the car runs well. There is i'm sure corrosion , although dont see much rust.

I was wondering how much an engine detailing / cleaning would cost and where I could get it done. Does it offer any performance benefits or is it simply aesthetic.

also I was wondering do you have to change oil filters when you change oil. If so what is a good filter brand for my car,

thanks)

hehe.. seems kind of akward to go to a detail shop and ask them "do you know what your doing" before having them do it))

i would do it myself but my only worry is hitting water-sensitive parts such as sensors / alternator, etc.

i dont know much about cars so i wouldnt not everything to cover before doing the cleaning

Any detail shop can clean your engine and basically it is just for looks. You should always change your filter when you have the oil changed.

i own a repair shop ,and most good detail shops will know how to do this without getting the wrong stuff wet on it,i do it on every car i work on before i even start to do any kind of a job, even a tune up,and the customers seem to like the fact that its free also, but most shops if the know how and what to do,will charge around 50 bucks for this service, and yes it is worth it,once you get it cleaned off its a lot easier to keep it clean, and this makes it a lot easier to keep clean also, but id ask at any good detail shop, and make sure they know not to get certain things wet on it like the alternator,it can short those out,and yes always change the filter with the oil in it,i use a fram filter and have never had any problems from them at all, there's a lot of different brands on the market, any one of the good better known brands will work just fine with it,good luck,i hope this helps.

why pay someone to do it .when you vcan do it your self.you can do it either at home by buying engine cleaner at the store.the type i use is gunk in the orange lid. spray it on your engine and let set then spray it off with either a pressure washer or if you dont have one just use a hose.the other way is to go to your local self serve car wash and see if it has a spot on the knob that says engine and tire cleaner. just spray done the engine let set about five minutes then rinse .if not clean enough spray again and let set longer. if you want you can leave the engine running while doing this.
