I have a freeze plug that looks like it is right behind where the suspension connects to the block. Has anyone heard of this and how did they put the plug in?

you will have to loosen the motor mount on that side and take the bolt out and jack the engine up to give you room to change it.

Yes Freeze plugs.These have nothing to do with Keeping Engine from Freezing.
These are Holes to remove Sand from inside Block When Foundry poured the Casting.I usaualey replace these on Eng
overhaul.Some can be replaced without pulling eng.I forgot You ask how they are installed.Put some good Sealant around new one use a Brass Drift and tap until it is tight.

While I am not specifically familiar with your 1971 Mustang, the expansion / freeze plugs are installed when the engine is assembled, before it is installed into the chassis.

that plug MUST be installed while the engine is removed from the car.
