My car wouldn't start this morning. I downloaded a guide on jumping cars off of the internet and it warned against jumping a frozen car battery saying that it could explode. My car is garage kept and it's about zero degrees out there now. It was -15 yesterday. Should I pay somebody to come jump the car and risk things or should I just do it myself? What temperature would a car battery freeze at?

Hello, I have replaced the alternator, which was bad, and the battery, would not take a charge, but the new alternator shows it's not putting out much when tested on the vehicle, but bench tests fine. Any suggestions on what to check next? Thanks.

Additional Details

Sorry about the confusion. The night the alternator went out (bearings or bushings were shot), we installed a remanufactured one and tried to start the truck and battery was dead. tried charging it all night long and it barely had enough juice to start the truck in the morning, so i replaced the battery with a new one. Dash gauge was still reading low after that so I had the store test everything, battery was good, 12.4 volts or so, but alternator was showing it was only putting out like 2 amps, so pulled it back off so they could bench test it, and that test showed the alt was fine, they even tested another one to compare the two. So they tell me it's either a fuse issue or wiring issue. I'm just trying to figure out the next thing to look at. Hope this clarifies it some.

Hello everyone

I have a Ford Windstar 98 model. I think that my fuse needs to be changed for my lighter. I checked them last night, but did not see the fuse for the lighter but I saw several other fuses. Can you please tell me which fuse controls the lighter.

I am having very unusual brake problems on my 2002 Nissan Altima with 94k miles. Recently the weather has turned extremely cold and on 3 separate cold days, my brake padel did not press down after driving about 1/4 mile.

When I start the car and put the car in reverse, the brake padel worked fine, but after I drove off and came to the first traffic light I was not able to stop because the bake padel would not go down. This happened on 2 different occasions. After 10-15 seconds of tapping onto brake padel caused it to work properly for the rest of the day.

I took the car to the dealership for inspection and mechanic said that he does not see anything wrong with my bakes. I did tell him that this happens only on the extremely cold (temperature below 20 degree F) days. This is turning into a huge problem for me. I was not able to stop at the red light. Luckily, no one was coming from the other side.

Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening? Any help will be appreciated.

A few days ago while I was stopped at a red light the car just died. At this point the key would still turn over, but it would not start. As I sat in the intersection waiting for help, the car slowly began to die, until their was not enough power even for my hazard lights. I finally got help and pushed my car back into a parking lot. There, two cars tried to jump-start my battery, which would not start the car. When I came back to the car later, the power turned on (lights, radio) but the car would still not start, so that ruled out my battery being the problem. The car has over a half tank of gas, so thats not the problem either. I have friends looking at it today, and while they have been working on cars for a long time, neither have any experience with Acuras. I cannot afford to take it to a shop. If you have any ideas as to what could be wrong with it, that would be very appreciated. And please don't post answers if you don't know what your talking about... Thanks!

I have a 98 S-10 that is having some issues but I don't know what they are and I'm almost afraid to find out. When you first start going in the morning and it's cold out, it's like the truck takes forever to shift gears. Then once it warms up it will run ok for a bit then around an idle speed of 35-40 it tends to not jerk hard, but still jerk like it's trying to figure out which gear to be in. Then...at 55+ it will run ok for a while and then it goes all weird like it's working HARD to be in the gear...like going up a hill and it stays like that. What is going on here? It's never had a flush or anything, we've been told to do that???

I have a 1997 Nissan Maxima. I'm having trouble getting it to start in cold weather. I recently got a new battery for it (2 mo ago) and a new alternator (3 mo ago). I usually have some trouble getting it to start on any morning (always the 2nd try) but when its really cold outside it just won't start :( I tried to start it this morning and ran the battery out (once again) from trying to start it up.
What do I do? Do I need to take it to the shop? I need some advice... please help! Thanks!

My car won't start in the freezing cold weather. It starts fine when it's a bit warmer, but not in the cold. Someone told me to get an engine heater, but I don't know where to start. I cannot use anything that has to be plugged in, because I live in a 2nd story apartment. And I'm pretty close to broke. Help!

I have to have my motor replaced in my 1998 Explorer. I have found a shop that has a motor from a 2000, that will sell for 700, they will install it for 500. I have already put 1700 into this truck for tensioners, at another shop which did not fix the problem, I will go to court to try to get this money back, and file with the bbb on this company. I have never dealt with a "junk yard" in the past, the guy said the engine runs, and was in an accident. Thanks for you help. It just seems that it is a cheaper way for me to go.

The ABS light on my Toyota Camry came on after I took the car to a mechanic shop. I took the car to the mechanic for new shocks and struts and balancing. This cost me about $700 dollar.
The ABS light was not on when I gave the car to the mechanic. When I picked the car up the ABS light was on.

I contacted the manager and he said their company will to pay for
repairs if we can prove the repair they did affected the ABS sensor in any way. He advised that I take the car to a Toyota dealership and let them diagnose the problem.

I took the car to Toyota for the diagnosis(cost me $40).
Their Diagonosis: ABS light on .
Code B38-Open Circuit in Right Wheel speed
sensor. $300 to replace.

What does this all mean?????????!

The folks at Toyota said the mechanic who replaced my shocks&struts could have caused the ABS problem if they yanked the old struts off too strongly.

what do you think?

The coolant level in the reservoir seems to be dry. However, the temperature gauge is not indicating overheating. The outside temperature where I live is -5 deg F this morning. I had the mechanic replace the water pump yesterday !
