Hello, I have replaced the alternator, which was bad, and the battery, would not take a charge, but the new alternator shows it's not putting out much when tested on the vehicle, but bench tests fine. Any suggestions on what to check next? Thanks.

Sorry about the confusion. The night the alternator went out (bearings or bushings were shot), we installed a remanufactured one and tried to start the truck and battery was dead. tried charging it all night long and it barely had enough juice to start the truck in the morning, so i replaced the battery with a new one. Dash gauge was still reading low after that so I had the store test everything, battery was good, 12.4 volts or so, but alternator was showing it was only putting out like 2 amps, so pulled it back off so they could bench test it, and that test showed the alt was fine, they even tested another one to compare the two. So they tell me it's either a fuse issue or wiring issue. I'm just trying to figure out the next thing to look at. Hope this clarifies it some.

i own a repair shop, and i,ll tell you what you need to look for, those cars have a lot of ground wires on them, and there all needed if one of those gets corroded over or real dirty ,it will make it show its not charging real good ,you can probably repair this one your self real easy, just take your time, and look for any kind of a ground wire on it and check both ends of it,where it starts from, and where it ends up at,also check your positive cable real good, these wires have to be in good condition, because the current from the alternator has to flow through them to get to the battery so any one of them gets corroded or dirty, and it will show a weak charge,I'm sure you,ll find it,good luck with it ,i hope this help,s.

Your lucky day. I got a '92 Eddie Bauer. If you do not have the Haynes book, send me an email at baratoman4u@yahoo.com and I will send the schematics for the wiring, if you do not plan to buy a Haynes book. Give me use of this expensive scanner I bought too. lol

But hopefully you know how to use an ohmeter. Anyway, I would check the battery post clamps to make sure they are clean.

Also, if the two are good, I would look at a LOOSE belt. Is it cracked or has cracks in it. Belts will stretch over time and then the tension needs to be readjusted. I forget, if it has the auto tension pulley on it too. But still check the belt.

If i remember , Fords use an external voltage regulator. Trace the positive cable from your battery. Does it run to the starter or does it route through another device on your inner fender? If it does, then you may need to replace your regulator only.
good luck.........
