Sounds like the T-Stat is defective. Check the coolant level 1st to make sure you havent lost any. If so, locate and repair the leak before you do anything. When was the cooling system serviced last? If more than a few years, replace coolant and possibly flush the system.
good luck..........

I would recommend checking the coolant level, and if that is ok, change the thermostat. On some vehicles, they are very easy to change, and they are almost always very cheap. It sounds like what you are experiencing is the t-stat hanging up. The year make and model would help...but have you had any cooling system problems in the past which would have caused you to dump coolant system sealer into the car?

ah the forgotten thermostat Yes it sounds like it. First check the coolent level, rust, bad hoses, stuff like that pressure testing works good to discover leaks. No leaks?? Now is the time to replace it and your coolent and probobley your hoses. Always replace the thrermostat at least every other coolent change or every other year. Heat is about the only thing that can kill an engine beside no oil which equals heat also.

It might be the thermostat but the easiest first check is the level of the coolant. If the coolant is low, check for leaks.

To find out, you have to take the thermostat out of the car. Put it in a pot of water and put it on the stove. When it boils it should pop up. If it doesn't do anything, it would be the thermostat needs to be replaced.

It probably is the thermostat. When you replace it consiser using one of the fail safe thermostats that when thy fail they stay open instead of closed. There is less of a chance for engine damage from over heating such as blown head gasket, warped heads, burnt pistons

It's either the thermostat or the fluid level or both. Check for leaks as well.

you should check if the cooling installation doesn't get air in the installation, if gets air the coolant doesn't circulate and doesn't cool the engine, and inside the car is not heating. If it is so you have to take the air out of installation.

Yes, that is signs of a thermostat problem, where temp fluctuates. Check your radiator that it is full also.
