When the headlights are off both of the brake lights work fine. However, when the headlights are on and you hit the brakes, one of the brake lights doesn't come on. What is causing this? Is this just a fuse problem or a larger electrical issue?

a mate of mine has an old holden barina from around about 1994 with 175,000kms on the clock and at times the engine just loses power. not all power but it is certainly noticeable. on some occasions all power is lost and she is forced to pull over and stop, turn off the ignition, then re-start it again. sometimes it gets going fine but has also been known to lose power again.
another common sympotom is the engine 'bounces'. it feels as though you are playing with the accelerator. this can also lead to the above problem. after been brought in numerous times to mechanics, they say that they can not find anything wrong (go figure). this problem is intermittent as it can go for a few days to a week without any disturbance, but then suddenly decided to play up.
thoughts i've had myself are problems with the carby, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter. all thoughts on the problem are certainly welcome.
thanx.

This morning I went to my car and the inside of my back window was a little bit icy, so I though i would wipe it down with a towel otherwise it takes forever for the demisters to clear it up. I was then told by my mum that I shouldn't do this because it would damage the demister lines. Is this true?

All gas stations where I live (Massachusetts) use 10% ethanol in all grades of gas. I want to know if anyone knows if this affects the octane rating at all. Ethanol has an octane rating of 110 so if they used 90% 87 octane and 10% 110 octane it would actually bring the octane to around mid grade level. I want to know if this is true or if the gas companies compansate for this and start off with even lower octane gas before they add the ethanol. If they dont then I should be able to run mid grade gas and get the full effect of premium.

I know the obvious, that it is bad driving without oil. Here's my scenario:
I have come to find out that my oil gauge doesn't work. My check engine light came on, and I pulled over right away. I noticed my oil tank was totally empty. Filled it up, but now I wonder how much damage was caused. I know I have to take it in, but I am anxious to find out how much I will have to fork over.

Is it true that you shouldn't fill your car with petrol when the petrol tanker is discharging into the petrol station's holding tanks, because you get the crap from the bottom of the holding tank?

I own a 2002 Chevy Silvarado with a 4.3L engine with just over 58,000 miles. Recently I've been hearing a metalic ping when the engine idles. The check engine light has not come on, and the truck seems to be running fine. The mechanics all seem to think the noise is normal for this model, and reccomend I use high octane fuel. What do you think?

Well, you see, my mom has this big scratch on her car. She says it's this lady's fault because she went too near and made her move left which caused her to scrape her car against a wall. She doesn't know what to do. The guy at the gasoline station said that she could either put paint over it which would make the scratch seem lighter or to get a new bumper and pay 100,000 yen. (I live in Japan) What should my mom do?

I own a 1991 Toyota Camry (88,000 miles) and I'm getting different answers from friends and family, but I want to know from an expert. It seems that a valve seal or a piston ring is leaking, not sure which. The reason I know this is because I found oil deposits on one of the spark plugs i took out. What are the long-term consequences? I appreciate your responses.
