a mate of mine has an old holden barina from around about 1994 with 175,000kms on the clock and at times the engine just loses power. not all power but it is certainly noticeable. on some occasions all power is lost and she is forced to pull over and stop, turn off the ignition, then re-start it again. sometimes it gets going fine but has also been known to lose power again.
another common sympotom is the engine 'bounces'. it feels as though you are playing with the accelerator. this can also lead to the above problem. after been brought in numerous times to mechanics, they say that they can not find anything wrong (go figure). this problem is intermittent as it can go for a few days to a week without any disturbance, but then suddenly decided to play up.
thoughts i've had myself are problems with the carby, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter. all thoughts on the problem are certainly welcome.
thanx.

I would think a major tune up is in order, plugs, wires, cap rotor, fuel & air filter, pvc valve. Next, don't forget that some cars have a pre filter in the gas tank (like a sock). This could be clogged too and might need to be replaced.

Sounds fuel related ...does this have an electric fuel pump? Fuel filter will also do this..thats a cheap and fast thing to try first.
