Depends on the car. If it is an older car with a carb it is probably bad. If it has injectors they might be dirty run some injector cleaner throw the system. Do a tune up and change out fuel filter and air filter. If it still has this problem than your heads are bad and need repairs.

Either a misfire or an o2 sensor issue. The first guy is correct. You can't ignore a check engine light. That sputtering is either misfire or detonation (suggesting o2 sensor problem.) If the code was emissions related, then I'm gonna say it's a bad o2 sensor. What's probably happening is the bad sensor is telling the computer that the engine needs more fuel, which won't all get burnt. This is giving the same effect as a misfire. Your o2 sensor controls the air/fuel ratio. If it's bad, you will have problems, and it will lead to a clogged catalytic converter

You don't really tell us much. We really need more information to be able to really offer you and real HELP.
Otherwise, this is pretty well reduced to the Karnak method diagnostics, and we all know how effective and satisfying that can be.

It's really hard to answer your question without some background on the car first. My question back to you would be when was the last time the car had a tune-up.
