Is it true that you shouldn't fill your car with petrol when the petrol tanker is discharging into the petrol station's holding tanks, because you get the crap from the bottom of the holding tank?

Ive never heard that, but its food for thought! Seems to make some sense. I will watch this space to see what others have to say. merry xmas.

I haven't heard that one. In any case, true or not, you have fuel filters to get rid of the crap before it enters the engine. That is why regular maintenence is important in your car.

FYI, don't use a mobile/ cell phone while filling the tank. Several people have been set alight and have severe burns or have died.
