This morning I went to my car and the inside of my back window was a little bit icy, so I though i would wipe it down with a towel otherwise it takes forever for the demisters to clear it up. I was then told by my mum that I shouldn't do this because it would damage the demister lines. Is this true?

You should only wipe the rear window with a soft towel going ALONG the wires. NOT across.
Most cars the wires are thin as a hair and on the inner side of the window. Moving across the wires can break them or detach them.

Some high dollar cars the wires are almost invisible and sandwiched inside the window.

I would also look for moisture in the boot /trunk of the car. This moisture condenses on the cold glass and then turns to ice. You normally should not have ice on the inside.

Happy Holidays.

Soft towel should be okay, as long as you gently wipe "along" and not "up & down". Good idea, actually, helps the demister along like you say.

If your car is from the mid-60's then yes, maybe.

They used to be a retro-fit on the outside of the glass. Ones from the last 30 years have been built into the edge of the glass so are more robust. you can wipe them safely if you go gently in a horizontal direction.

don't use a scraper on it though.

Your mum is right, if you wipe over the window you can damage the element. Check your manual to see what kind of cloth you can use without causing damage.
Sometimes can find the info online for some cars.

,Using a towel should not cause a problem but using anything that could damage one of the fine wires in the heating element will render the heater useless, such as a window ice scraper.
