Every diagram of every starter I have seen shows two bolts coming off the flywheel housing, and the starter fits over those bolts and is tightened down with a washer and a 17mm nut.

Situation: I can find the lower right nut [the one visible if looking from the front of the right rear tire][right = passenger side, left = driver side]. It was easy to remove.

I cannot find the upper left nut. When I crawl under and wrap my hand around the starter to reach for the upper left nut, I cannot locate it. There is something there but it is more square in shape, about 1/2 to 3/4 inches square and curved or rounded on one side, and it is built up taller than the lower right bolt [ maybe a 1/4 inch taller.

Can someone tell me how to remove this starter?

Can someone tell me what is going on in the area where the upper left nut should be?

I need an answer fast - my daughter needs the car to go back to school next week!

I would prefer to take this starter off in one piece.

Just bought a 73 and can't figure out where the headlight knob, windshield wiper knob, anything is. Anyone have a bug who could tell me. And there are also a bunch of switches underneath. Don't know what those are for either.

My vanagon started acting up a few days ago:
Ist, the Temp gauge was giving a high reading without the engine being hot.
2nd, battery charging was very low
3rd, the fuel pump worked intermitently.
NOW:
the fuel and temperature gauges are dead
the battery won't charge at all (I have replaced the alternator)
the fuel pump doesn't work.

Any help finding what the problem may be will be greatly appreciated.

Some have said that the Volkswagen has one of if not the top rating of safety in it's class. Does that include the Beetle? They're cute, but It seems so small. Wouldn't it get crushed in an accident?

Had rattling sound for a few days so took it to garage, where they said the pipe had severed off by catalytic converter, which they welded back, but they did state it would be temporary. Now have black smoke from exhaust, does this mean I need a new cat, or any other reason? Hoping to buy the part myself and garage fix it.
