The Golf is Awesome I would say the best is a Mark V Gti or Mark 2 GTi 16V.
If you are looking to buy the current model I would look at the 2.0 GT TDi or the new 1.4 GT

It depends on what you want in a Golf exactly. For economy go for an MK3 TDi. For speed you go with an R32 (if available to you). For easy mods and add-ons and to me probably the best bargain is an MK2 16V chassis because it is the most universal chassis so far which can accomodate almost any engine, transmission, heating, seating, interior, panels, grilles etc.

Mk 5 GT TDi with a boost chip fitted. Quicker than a GTi but over 50mpg.

Got to be the old Mk II models. Although they are somewhat expensive now for what they are you can still pick up a rather ropey version for a reasonable price and they are starting to get a big following.

i am not sure on the "best"....but my baby was a 1800, 1991 model mk1....and after all her years she had her power, was reliable and excellent!
