The Jetta is more functional, but the GTi is more fun. It also depends on which engine you are looking for. The 1.8T has many aftermarket performance parts that can turn that car into a beast. If you just wanted a fun car out of the box you could find a VR6 engine in either one. I had a Jetta GLi VR6 and it was one of the most fun vehicles I ever had, fast, comfortable, and stealthy enough not to attract the wrong kind of attention. As far as reliability issues, the window regulators that were faulty were addressed by VW and corrected as they came up. It is a pain if one goes out, mine went out on a friday night right after the service department closed and the car sat in the garage all weekend. The ignition coil issue was also resolved and the parts were replaced without cost or hassle. Not only were the parts replaced by VW for free, VW discontinued doing business with the supplier of the coils and fired the employee that was purchasing the part. Look at both in different colors and you will find one that you just have to have, then you will have the answer to your question.

VWs have had their share of reliability problems lately and a notorious one was a problem with the power windows. Almost everyone I know with a Jetta or Golf had the windows fail. VW extended the warranty on this and came out with an upgraded part, so see if there are any maintenance records on the car you're interested in.

Otherwise, I'd go with the Jetta, assuming the GTI has two doors. The four-door Jetta is more practical. If the GTI has four doors, then I'd consider it.

I have had terrible luck with my 99 Jetta, but everyone I know with a GTI (similar age) loves theirs.

My Jetta has had the following replaced (NOT due to accidents):

Engine
3 timing belts
2 serpentine belts
sunroof
3 power window mechanisms
All the doors leak waxy goo (for almost 8 years now!)
Coolant flange
7 or 8 different sensors
2 alternators (sp?)
6-cd player
center console
3 interior lights
glove compartment door
headrest

Pretty much the only original part is my steering wheel!

=)

I've had terrible luck, but like i mentioned my GTI friends have not had nearly as many problems. I have the new body style Jetta, so maybe it has something to do with that (they had only been out 2 or 3 months when we bought the car). Hopefully it works out better for you than it did for me.

Best wishes!

Neither. I have had 3 Volkswagens, a 2000, 2001, 2002 Jetta/Passat/GTI and I had nothing but problems with them. Volkswagens aren't cheap either. I bought them new and had the same problems in all 3 cars. Stupid EPC light would come on and I couldn't shift my car to drive, reverse, anything. Then my windows would go down all the way and never come up, engine light came on. I hate Volkswagens, and I know a few people who had the same problems as did I with these cars. Consumer reports don't rate volkswagens as the car to have. Try a nissan, toyota, honda, they are better cars

In that model year area I'd go for the GTI. Jetta's had issues with reliability. Go for the GTI.

I actually have owned a 2002 Passat, I drove it for 75k, and truthfully loved it. It had its percentage of subject matters, and fixing them isn't less costly. None of those fashions are a lot less extreme priced to maintain, as they're german man made. Which truthfully signifies that there are 500 elements to at least one ingredient, the position a jap style has 20 elements for one ingredient. That being reported, there is something about German vehicles that i appreciate. I now personal a 2003 A4. popular i love that motor vehicle more effective than the Passat. it truly is way sportier, i love the seem more effective efficient, too. yet, it truly is likewise a lot more effective complicated than the Passat grow to be. I actually have it in the save now for a sludge difficulty, it really is largely going to recommend a sparkling engine....(luckily it truly is roofed by technique of the qualified pre owned assure) I truthfully like the three sequence, inspite of the undeniable fact that it truly is a lot more effective extreme priced than both the VW, or Audi. It really relies upon on what you desire. If type is the most important, the three sequence or a4 take the VW. popular inspite of the undeniable fact that, so some distance as fee is in touch, you won't be able to bypass incorrect with the VW. Plus, it form of appears like it really is the vehicle you're leaning to. good luck, both selection you're making is the right one, as long as its what you desire!!!
