my ex boyfriend had a 2002 gti. he got it for the sole purpose of making it fast and racing it. it had more problems than he knew what to do with. he was driving down the road and a pipe literally came loose and fell off in the road. oh yeah, and his clutch blew out after he had it for 3 weeks. i owned a beetle and it also had a lot of problems. volkswagens (all of them) are very expensive to maintain. i would advise you NOT to buy one. get a honda instead. you can make them faster than a volkswagen.

I have a Golf. I love GTis, but needed a four door for my kids. The first gen (late 70s and early 80s) was crazy fast for a small car and established the hot hatch craze. As time went on, there were more and more aftermarket suppliers for them. The current GTi is very slick. My preference is the R32.

Tuners: EIP and NGP, strangely enough, both are in MD

I have a 2002 MK4 GTI with the 1.8T. MK2's (1985-1992) are the best handling and easiest to mod however, MK4's (1999-2006) are the easiest to find right now with low miles for cheap. The newest GTi's (mk5) are the fastest but most $$$. Volkswagens in general are great "overall" cars. They present the best balance of performance, handling and style.... well in my opinion anyway. I say get an MK4 1.8T and email me for ideas to make it go fast. n19811978@yahoo.com

All out handler and driving fun= MK2
All out best car (power, comfort, style, quality)= MK4
Anything else is wrong.
The GTI has gotten better with each generation in every area but handling.
Never driven the MK5 and won't comment until I do.

MK1 is very easy to maintain and operate. Modding I would have to say MK2. MK3 and 4 are good in stock for both reliability, speed, handling, styling, and for finding. It really depends on what you are looking for to answer this question.
