Had rattling sound for a few days so took it to garage, where they said the pipe had severed off by catalytic converter, which they welded back, but they did state it would be temporary. Now have black smoke from exhaust, does this mean I need a new cat, or any other reason? Hoping to buy the part myself and garage fix it.

Black smoke usally means un burned fuel. Have it checked soon. Unburned fuel in the exhaust will overheat the cat and could start a fire. Oil is usally a whitish-blue smoke.

You problem is not oil burning, which produces white smoke, but a fuel/air ratio problem. What has possibly happened is that your exhaust issues have created a scenario for which your engine's control module (controls fuel and air delivery) has tried to compensate for. Until your catalytic converter and exhaust system are repaired it will be very difficult to diagnose your problem. Do you have a check engine light on?
