Some have said that the Volkswagen has one of if not the top rating of safety in it's class. Does that include the Beetle? They're cute, but It seems so small. Wouldn't it get crushed in an accident?

I have had my poor 99 VW Jetta VR6 (new body style) hit many many times ( I commute a lot - I get nailed!). It is VERY expensive to fix, and despite being in some accidents that were $7-8K repairs, my airbags (I have 4) have NEVER gone off. Not sure if thats a good thing or not, but I have survived all of my accidents with only whiplash and bad bruises at worst. I feel safe in it, but repairs and shoddy service are making me leave VW for Toyota. Good luck to you!

You don't get crushed in an accident, because the passengers are in a "cage", then they have the fenders designed to absorb impact (crumple) plus you have all the airbags and seatbelts.

Fortunately, I've never had an accident serious enough for airbag deployment. But I can say that the way the VWs handle is a big safety features when it comes to avoiding accidents.

Surprisingly, the beetle is an extremely safe car. Very much UNLIKE the old beetle, which is very dangerous from a standpoint of crash safely relative to today's cars.
