My Jetta has had the following replaced (NOT due to accidents):

Engine
3 timing belts
2 serpentine belts
sunroof
3 power window mechanisms
All the doors leak waxy goo (for almost 8 years now!)
Coolant flange
7 or 8 different sensors
2 alternators (sp?)
6-cd player
center console
3 interior lights
glove compartment door
headrest

Pretty much the only original part is my steering wheel!

=)

Sadly, I think the newer Jetta's (1999-now) are having major problems! My poor Jetta just had $2000 worth of coolant flanges and hoses replaced.

Its not only the cost of the German parts ($$$) but the labor too.
I personally have always had a terrible time with their service department.

Due to the high repair/replacement costs on my car and poor / nasty service, I will be selling my Jetta soon. I plan on buying a Scion Tc, due to its features (many are similar to my Jetta), safety and mostly its reliability.

Too bad my Jetta was such a junker - I would absolutely buy it again just for the styling and details they included, but due to all the $$$$$$ it has cost me over the years, I just can't bring myself to do it!

Best of luck to you!

We've had two VWs (why, I don't know, because we don't have any luck with them). A few friends from college have had nothing but trouble with them, too.

Typically, VWs have electrical issues. People were always telling me my lights were out - then they'd go back on - then off. I had a 2001 GTI (good looking and drives well, but). At the end of 2002 the brakes were totally gone. VW part are typically more expensive and so is labor at a good VW shop.

I was always taking the car in and always tapping into my savings.

If you REALLY want a jetta - then get it and pray you don't have any problems. I really wanted the GTI even though everyone told me not to get one. I should have listened. I prefer Hondas, Toyotas or Nissans (in that order). They have a reputation for reliability, durability and safety. Hondas also have the highest resale value!

Good luck. (How about a Scion TC - made by Toyota? - those are very good looking and reliable.) Or a Honda Civic? (We had a Civic Hyrbid that was awesome!)

Depends on new or old, and if old, where made.

Avoid any Jetta made in Mexico (the VIN starts with a 3). Their build quality just isn't up to snuff.

I've had a 1987 diesel wolfsburg edition, and still have a 94 jetta turbo diesel. In 10 years and 400k, the only engine repair (other than the standard oil changes, etc) was a starter that went after 9 years.

German cars drive unlike anything else. They actually feel like they're trying to stamp bumps in the roads back in ;)

The last generation was not so great.

This new generation has finally gotten it right according to the research data. You might also look up on the reviews.

German cars are better than sex(almost).

If I had to do over again, I would not, never, ever buy a VW Jetta or VW product. I currently own a 2007 Jetta and it has been nothing but trouble. What really irritates me is that the headliner has come loose and would cost about $1000 to replace. I keep my cars for years after paying off and not one that I owned ever had a headliner come loose. Talk about shoddy craftmanship. And now my transmission is hard shifting and I really don't want any more bad news. Oh, and this one is paid for also.
