Maybe it is because they are trying as new marketing technique or something.

Because of the strict smog controls in the Usa, both Ca. and the federal regulations as well. And each year as the car ages the emissions are worse for both HC, and CO, and unburned gas within the combustion chamber. These VW bugs made in Mexico are mostly Carburated, and not fuel injected and also do not have Cat convertors, EGR, and or on board computers the monitor the fuel being given to the engine for the best possible control of emissions. And Also the Fuel in Mexico do not have the additives which makes the fuel burn cleaning with those somog devices, as well as the material used in the cylinder heads and valves.

The reason why VW dont sell on USA the old beetle is because they sold all the bugs on europe clubs and south america markets They sold close to 20,000,000 in the worldwide. In addittion because this model was a icon from Germany Nazy and the goverment of US avoid problems, mention to us that it just for mexican people.

I believe it has to do with emissions control and safety. They were producing that exact same beetle 30 years later. No additional safety features and no changes to emissions control. I love the old bugs as much as the next guy and how cool would it be to go buy a brand new old one! But with no advances in anything, they can't be sold here. I wonder if it's legal to go down there and buy one and bring it here?

Mad Scientist Matt is the closest but everyone seems to forget another huge problem, and that was sales. Honda and Toyota basicly came into the same market as the bug with a much more up to date car and the bug just couldn't keep up with demands of the american market. And as well the design had basicly been pushed to it's limits saftey and emissions wise, and it was getting to harder to pass american laws.
Basicly it comes down to customer demand it was still there in brazil and mexico, long after the market had dried up in the states.

The classic Beetle was fundementally a 1930's era car with extensive updating. However, they weren't able to update it enough to get it to pass emissions standards for the '80s, or crash safety standards.

What are you talking about? I have neighbors who have the old style VW Beetle. Are you talking about the tin model from the 60s and 70s?
