Every diagram of every starter I have seen shows two bolts coming off the flywheel housing, and the starter fits over those bolts and is tightened down with a washer and a 17mm nut.

Situation: I can find the lower right nut [the one visible if looking from the front of the right rear tire][right = passenger side, left = driver side]. It was easy to remove.

I cannot find the upper left nut. When I crawl under and wrap my hand around the starter to reach for the upper left nut, I cannot locate it. There is something there but it is more square in shape, about 1/2 to 3/4 inches square and curved or rounded on one side, and it is built up taller than the lower right bolt [ maybe a 1/4 inch taller.

Can someone tell me how to remove this starter?

Can someone tell me what is going on in the area where the upper left nut should be?

I need an answer fast - my daughter needs the car to go back to school next week!

I would prefer to take this starter off in one piece.

CenTexan has the right answer. There is a slot in the transmission that holds the hex end of the bolt or a "D" shaped bolt (head) and a 17mm wrench should fit on the nut located behind the right side of the fan shroud. You'll need a 13mm for the battery cable and a female pushon connector for the solenoid wire. But do disconnect the battery before removing the cable at the starter to prevent sparks and such.

The factory is a "D" shaped bolt, but if someone replaced it it could be a hex.

While standing facing the motor, the upper nut is located right behind the cooler fan housing. Use a 17 mm wrench to remove.

I'm sorry, I don't know. I have heard from air cooled VW guys that there are 4 bolts that hold the body on and 4 people can easily lift the body off and set it aside to easily work on the motor. If you get the body out of the way it might be easier to see and access the upper bolt.

If you removed both nuts, it may just be stuck on. It is a very old car remember. Try rocking it out or give it a few hard (but not excessive) hits with your fist.
