I have a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLS and I had to have my transmission replaced in 2005. If you still have a warranty take it to the volkswagen dealership they should have to fix it for free. Thats what happened to me. My car had a ton of problems after that too...

I can think two reasons:

1. Check oil. - Park the car on a level ground. Start the engine. Check oil when it is still idling. Add oil as necessary thru the dipstick hole. Take care not to spill, it is easy to spill if you do not use a funnel. If the oil is level is OK, then -

2. Your oil pressure valve is not working properly. This is a transmission shops' job. They will replace the valve after hoisting. You will find it difficult to do it yourself.

The oil pressure valve directs the oil pressure to the right gear in order to change at right speeds. It is housed inside the transmission. This is why you cannot do it yourself.

I do not know of any computer for the transmission in your car.

Choose a reputable transmission shop. There are a lot of unscrupulous operators out there. It should cost around $350 to $400 tops.

Time for a rebuild. The higher gears usually go first.
